Job summary

LensCrafters is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to deliver high-quality eye care by supporting doctors and front-end staff. You will assist with patient care, run pre-exam tests, and help with eye exams while maintaining accurate records and ensuring patient comfort.

The role requires strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to use ophthalmic equipment and exam software. You may work evenings or weekends depending on location and patient flow.

Qualifications

• HS diploma or equivalent required.
• 1+ year of customer service experience.
• Strong communicator and listener.
• Ability to use ophthalmic equipment and exam software.
• Healthcare/optical experience and JCAHPO certs are a bonus.

Responsibilities

• Assists with patient care and eye exams, managing records and patient flow.
• Performs preliminary evaluations: histories, meds, acuity, refraction, tonometry.
• Conducts tests: OCTs, biometry, topography, retinal imaging.
• Explains measurements and answers patient questions.
• Maintains HIPAA-compliant record handling and scheduling.
• Ensures equipment and exam lanes are disinfected and ready.
• Supports weekends/evenings as needed by location.
• Adheres to attendance, dress code, and company policies.

Job Description

GENERAL FUNCTION

The Ophthalmic Technician ensures all patients receive the highest quality ophthalmic care while receiving medical/surgical eye care. This role provides an unsurpassed patient experience by seamlessly linking the doctor and other primary care functions together.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

• Assists with patient care and eye exams, including managing patient records and supporting patient flow throughout the exam
• Performs preliminary evaluations including but not limited to obtaining accurate and detailed patient histories, reviewing medication lists carefully, visual acuities, motility evaluations, pupil and angle assessments, refraction, pachymetry, applanation tonometry, and pupil dilation
• Performs special testing including but not limited to OCTs, biometry, topography, and retinal imaging/photography
• Performs all pre-examination testing with accuracy and attention to detail; takes initiative to explain all measurements and answer any questions the patient may have
• Identifies situations involving dissatisfied patients and acts quickly for resolution
• Performs work efficiently, accurately and thoroughly despite time pressure and patient volume
• Handles and files all patient records in an organized and efficient manner in accordance with practice standards and HIPAA
• Effectively utilizes appointment book/scheduling procedures and computer operation/procedures
• Maintains safe working environment for all team members and patients
• Adapts to various examination scenarios and is personable with patients and staff
• Responsible for maintenance and disinfection of equipment and exam lanes
• Works weekends and evenings when necessary, in support of the business needs (varies by location)
• Adheres to attendance and daily time keeping requirements
• Adheres to all company policies and procedures
• Consistently maintains proper dress code
• Proactively fulfills all responsibilities as assigned by lead technician or ophthalmologist

Basic Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent
• 1+ year of strong customer service skills (internal/external)
• Strong communicator and listener
• Problem solving ability
• Organization skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to assess priorities, address multiple tasks and deadlines in fast-paced environment
• Ability to use exam software, point-of-sale technology and ophthalmic equipment
• Ability to work autonomously
• Knowledge of office environment
• Strong basic math skills

Preferred But Not Required Qualifications

• Experience in healthcare/clinical setting
• Previous experience in customer service, retail and/or optical
• Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Certification(s)
