Role Description The Ophthalmic Technician is a full-time, on-site role based in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, South Carolina area. In this position, the technician performs preliminary patient assessments, including obtaining medical histories, measuring visual acuity, and conducting diagnostic tests such as tonometry, visual fields, and imaging as directed by the ophthalmologist or optometrist. The role includes preparing exam rooms, assisting with in-office procedures, administering eye drops, and ensuring accurate documentation in the electronic medical record. The technician supports patient education by explaining tests, treatments, and follow-up instructions, while maintaining a clean, safe clinical environment. Collaboration with providers and other staff is essential to support efficient clinic flow and a positive patient experience.

Qualifications

• Clinical ophthalmic skills, including visual acuity testing, tonometry, refraction support, and experience with diagnostic equipment (e.g., OCT, fundus photography, visual field analyzers).
• Strong patient care and communication abilities, with a focus on compassion, clear explanations, and maintaining patient comfort and confidentiality.
• Proficiency in medical documentation, electronic health records, and basic computer skills to ensure accurate and efficient charting.
• Knowledge of basic ocular anatomy, common eye diseases, and ophthalmic terminology to support providers and patient education.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical setting, manage multiple tasks, and collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited ophthalmic technician/assistant program or COA/COT certification preferred.
• Previous experience in ophthalmology or optometry settings is highly beneficial; medical assistant or clinical technician background is a plus.
