Job summary

Prisma Health in Richland, SC is seeking an Ophthalmology Assistant to perform technical procedures and gather medical information during patient visits. You will assist with pre-certifications, referrals, and scheduling, while documenting in the electronic medical record.

You will work under supervision, operate equipment such as autorefractor, visual field, OCT, IOL master, and contribute to patient education and clinic operations.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent or higher and ophthalmology certification.
  • Experience not required; substitutes available per job terms.
  • Proficiency with basic office software and medical records systems.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain brief medical history and chief complaint from patients.
  • Maintain patient records in the electronic medical record system.
  • Set up and assist with ophthalmology office procedures and tests.
  • Operate procedures/tests within certification scope (auto-refractor, refraction, visual field, OCT).
  • Assist physician during exams, scribing and tasks as needed.
  • Schedule surgeries and referrals; obtain pre-certifications for procedures.
  • Handle prescriptions and communications per physician orders.
  • Monitor equipment and stock supplies; provide patient education.

Job Summary

Responsible for performing various technical procedures for patients and obtaining medical information from patients during their office visits and for using this information to perform related tasks. Assists with obtaining pre-certifications and performing referrals when needed for patients.

Essential Functions

  • Obtains brief medical history and chief complaint from patient.

  • Maintains patient’s medical record via electronic medical record.

  • Sets up and assists with office procedures.

  • Performs within scope of training and certification to do procedures/tests including: Autorefraction using the Topcon auto-refractor, refraction using the Jackson Cross Cylinder Method, Humphrey visual field, OCT, IOL master, pachymeter, checking vision using Snellen Chart, Goldman Tonometry or Tono pen, brightness acuity testing, sonometric scans, stereo testing, color deficiency testing, EOM's checking pupils for afferent pupillary deficiency.

  • Assists physician by scribing and performing various tasks during patient exam.

  • Schedules surgeries, follow up appointments and referrals as requested. Obtains pre-certifications for all surgeries.

  • Phones/faxes in prescriptions for medications and glasses per physician orders

  • Receives and returns phone calls, screening and forwarding those requiring physician action.

  • Monitors and maintains stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.

  • Provides education/training to patient/family

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education - High School diploma or equivalent OR post-high school diploma/highest degree earned. Completion of Ophthalmology Certification Program

  • Experience - No experience defined.

In Lieu Of
  • Three (3) years of Ophthalmology experience may be substituted for completion of an Ophthalmology Certification Program
