Job Summary

The Ophthalmic Assistant supports ophthalmologists and optometrists with patient care, diagnostic testing, and clinical procedures. Responsibilities include preparing patients, performing vision tests, assisting with imaging, maintaining records, educating patients, maintaining instruments, and supporting physicians during minor procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Assist eye care providers in exam and treatment of patients.
  • Initiate documentation of chief complaint, history, review of systems, and ocular findings.
  • Perform vision testing (acuity, color vision, lensometry, keratometry, tonometry, perimetry, etc.).
  • Document provider information and patient instructions.
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures and laser treatments.
  • Inventory and maintain surgical instruments.
  • Complete prescription refill requests with documentation.
  • Screen patients for emergency situations and communicate with provider.
  • Maintain constant alertness and safety.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one year of health care experience.
  • COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) certification strongly preferred or willingness to obtain within 18 months.
  • Experience in ophthalmology or optometry setting is a plus.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent use of hearing, vision, and speech for communication.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of objects 0–25 lbs; occasional lifting of 25–50 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, keyboard use, and data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, squatting, and repetitive movements.
  • Occasional use of vision to judge distances.
  • Occasional driving.
License & Certifications
  • Basic Life Support – Healthcare Provider (BLS HCP) required within 90 days.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) – Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Location & Hours

State of Work Location: Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wisconsin.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 per week.
