Job summary

Harris County Precinct 2 is seeking a road maintenance worker to perform a range of duties from pothole patching to drainage maintenance. The role involves operating various equipment, setting traffic controls, and handling road materials.

Qualifications include a High School diploma or GED and a CDL Class B with Tanker Endorsement. Prior road maintenance experience is preferred, with 40-hour work weeks and day/night shifts; some weekends may be required.

  • Handles road materials such as asphalt, oils, gravel, limestone, concrete.
  • Picks up trash and maintains restrooms.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job description

What you will do at Harris County Precinct 2

Under general supervision of Public Works Superintendent, performs a variety of road maintenance and construction duties.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Performs a variety of road & drainage maintenance including pothole patching, asphalt repairs, ditching, debris removal, and traffic signs

  • Operates light and heavy construction equipment, including pick-up trucks, hydro-scopic excavator, rollers, street sweepers, dump trucks, trash truck, vacuum/jet truck, front end loaders, backhoes, and power tools, as required

  • Performs routine daily maintenance including pre/post trip inspections, checking and filling fluids, report repairs, and cleaning all offices, work area, equipment, and facilities

  • Performs construction duties including setting up road signs, barricades, flagging and directing traffic, lasers, and utilizing hand tools

  • Handles road materials including asphalt, oils, gravel, limestone, concrete, compounds, and crack sealer material

  • Picks up trash and litter in various locations and maintains restrooms

  • Perform any other duties or responsibilities that may be assigned.

Education:


  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent


Certification:


  • Class "B" (CDL) commercial driver's license is required with Tanker Endorsement (Endorsement can be acquired within 90 days)


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Must be proficient in multi-tasking to meet deadlines provided

  • Ability to document activities both written and electronic; able to utilize work order management system

  • Ability to work well with all levels of management, staff, and public

  • Knowledgeable of principles, methods, practices, materials, equipment, traffic control and tools used in road maintenance operations.

  • One (1) year of road maintenance experience (preferred)

Work Environment and Physical Demands:


  • Work is on active construction sites involving pervasive hazards associated with heavy equipment and tool operations; speeding traffic; loud and constant noise; and regular exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and combustible materials. Required to work outdoors on varied and often unstable terrain involving exposure to varying weather conditions of extreme hot and cold temperatures. Some working conditions require special precautions and the use of protective gear (e.g., hard hats, respirator masks, gloves, etc.).

  • Essential functions involve significant physical demands related to repeated lifting of up to 50 pounds unassisted, 100 pounds with assistance rarely; carrying tools, materials, and equipment over rough terrain; climbing, reaching and bending. Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, drive, hear, bend, stoop, twist, and balance; need the ability to occasionally kneel and crawl; need the ability to grasp manual controls and the ability to use foot controls and operate gas, diesel, and electrically powered equipment.
