This position involves manual and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, remote facilities, pumping station equipment, and lift stations under supervision.
- Maintains the Wastewater Treatment Plant and Remote Facilities in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; performs routine general equipment and building maintenance in addition to routine grounds maintenance work.
- Operates and maintains various wastewater treatment process equipment such as chemical feed systems, pumps, boilers, grit removal equipment, elevators, and other plant equipment; adjusts according to established procedures when necessary.
- Makes pump and chemical feed changes, as required.
- Collects wastewater samples and performs routine tests as assigned and records results.
- Performs preventive maintenance and/or repair maintenance on Wastewater Treatment Plant and Remote Facilities equipment as assigned. May assist in the maintenance and repair work on more complex machinery and electrical equipment.
- Unloads, dilutes, mixes, and monitors strengths of Hypochlorite levels at Retention Treatment Basins.
- Cleans floors, chemical feeding equipment, wet wells, containment areas, and flushes tanks and basins.
- Operates all plant equipment and works as Plant Operator A in emergencies.
- Operates forklifts, mowers, sewer jets, backhoes and other machinery as required. Also, may be required to use a variety of standard and specialty tools and equipment in the performance of duties.
- Performs related duties as required.
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- Minimum of 2 years’ work in operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment including industrial size pumps, motors, and compressors.
- Previous work experience in a water or wastewater treatment plant is preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
- Must have the ability to obtain wastewater treatment plant operator Class D certification from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy within 10 test cycles from date of hire.
- Familiarity with computers, including operating network and plant control computers and process data collection/reporting systems.
- Ability to work independently, making routine decisions on the operation of plant machinery.
- Experience in lead worker responsibilities highly desirable.
- Must have attendance record acceptable to management.
- Must be able to understand open channel and pressure hydraulic systems.
Classification G
Entry level, must meet all minimum qualifications (Education, Experience, and State of Michigan driver’s license)
Classification I
Must have the EGLE “D” Wastewater Certification
- Work regularly requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; occasionally required to work during inclement weather on off shifts and weekends.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to occasionally work at various heights, depths, and confined spaces.
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. Must be able to wear a respirator when required in hazardous areas.
- Exposure to both inside and outside environments, and inclement weather conditions.
- Must be able to work varied shifts.
- Must be able to respond to emergency calls within 45 minutes.
