Job Summary
This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and secure manner in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage. Equipment utilized in this position includes, but is not limited to, trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes, blades, graders, compactors, and other specialized equipment.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to all applicable policies and procedures.
- Responsible for excavating trenches, digging holes, leveling dirt, and leveling asphalt.
- Reads and interprets grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
- Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
- Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
- Transport vehicle equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
- Adheres to procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
- Follow instructions and comprehend construction needs.
- Timely & regular attendance is required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Able to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment operators, to maintain a safe environment and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE.
- Able to follow directions, instructions, structured processes, and procedures.
- Able to work in all weather conditions (extreme heat/cold, wind, rain).
- Able to work in various project locations, overtime as needed, and be flexible to rapid schedule changes at times.
- Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs, and techniques.
- Knowledge of equipment to ensure proper working conditions by checking gauges, dials, and other indicators.
- Able to communicate effectively in English/Spanish (preferred).
Education and Experience
- High School or equivalent (preferred).
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the construction industry.
- One (1) year of work experience on roads and ground maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to use equipment and knowledge of road maintenance standards properly.
- CDL or other special classification of operator’s license may be required.
- Valid Driver’s License with clear MVR may be required.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.
- Frequently ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
- Constantly reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate levers, and steering wheel.
- Regularly sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift/workday.
- May stoop, kneel, or bend on an occasional basis.
- May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
- Regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Exposure to the outdoor environment with machinery/equipment in the surrounding area.
- Able to push/pull 80+lbs and lift/carry 80+lbs.
- Excellent vision or the use of prescribed lenses.
- Able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment is required: including but not limited to steel-toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.
