Job description

Job Purpose

Operates production machinery safely and efficiently; maintains appropriate documentation; communicates ideas and problems to staff; performs scheduled preventive maintenance; participates in production equipment changeovers; and is responsible for producing best quality product.

Safety

Follows all employer safety and health regulations and company policies, procedures, and practices. Ensures the safe and efficient operation of equipment to meet or exceed company safety standards. Follows Lock Out/Block Out/Tag Out policy, wears proper PPE, and proactively addresses unsafe conditions and behaviors. Reports unsafe acts or conditions to the Shift Production Supervisor and participates in scheduled safety training.

Daily Operations
  • Monitors and explains deviations from expected Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Completes machine and task‑specific training as documented on the Operator Development Plan.
  • Performs operator checklists and collects quality data as directed.
  • Corrects deviations from quality standards and responds to deviations within SPC charting.
  • Communicates problems, progress reports, and continuous improvement ideas to management, maintenance, and production personnel.
  • Performs maintenance tasks as outlined by the Maintenance Manager and in response to machine malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoots machine and process issues.
  • Engages in personal development by setting SMART goals, meeting with managers, and participating in plant improvement teams.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning tasks per the Master Cleaning Schedule.
  • Maintains accurate production reporting documentation.
  • Participates in plant teams on safety, quality, sustainability, OEE, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
Quality/ GMP/ Food Safety

Produces and/or packs best quality product that meets or exceeds company and customer expectations. Labels and tags production, maintains traceability, isolates non‑conforming products, and records results in the specified system. Communicates out‑of‑specification conditions and food defense issues to the appropriate personnel. Follows GMP, HACCP, and prerequisite food safety programs to prevent contamination. Maintains a clean, organized work area via effective housekeeping, sanitization, and waste management. Proactively resolves housekeeping and sanitization issues.

Preventive Maintenance
  • Performs scheduled production equipment changeovers with limited impact to OEE.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance tasks and manages them in the Computerized Maintenance Management Software.
  • Proactively addresses machine inefficiencies during preventive maintenance and ensures equipment is clean and in ‘showroom condition’ after work.
  • Evaluates equipment for improvement opportunities, tags components needing repair or replacement, and records parts removed and inventory status.
  • Notifies the Maintenance Manager when parts inventory is low or reaches reorder points.
Experience, Educational and Technical Qualifications

High School diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess a sense of urgency, accountability, business ethics, professionalism, self‑motivation, and a desire to improve the business. May be required to act as Person In Charge in the absence of management.

Environmental Working Conditions

Work may be inside or outside; exposure to extreme heat (temperatures >100°F for >1h), noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils, and cutting fluids. Conditions may vary depending on shift and production area.
