DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision, performs skilled and manual labor work activities in the construction and maintenance of the water and water distribution and wastewater collections systems; operates equipment assigned to division; assists other divisions/departments as requested; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Assists in the construction, installation, maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of the water and wastewater collection systems, including lines, valves, meters, etc.
- Makes water and wastewater taps.
- Lays lines, locates lines, locates, and repairs leaks, lubricates, and/or replaces valves, etc.
- Performs landscaping duties, repairing previous work sites.
- Assists with updating line and valve locations.
- Assists in the maintenance, cleanliness, and upkeep of the physical plant.
- Assists in all types of maintenance duties, including pouring and finishing concrete, plumbing, etc.
- Operates motorized equipment safely and efficiently.
- Detects malfunctions in vehicles and equipment and reports all problems to supervisor; assists with maintenance (including preventive maintenance) on vehicles and equipment.
- Cleans and properly stores equipment and tools after use.
- Assists with meter inspections.
- Assists other divisions/departments as requested.
- Completes required continuing education classes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent required.
- Must possess a valid drivers’ license.
- Prior related experience preferred.
MUST BE ABLE TO:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, employees, the general public.
- Perform heavy labor for extended periods of time, often during adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to respond to calls in emergency situations at all hours.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Work involves sitting at a desk or table
- Work is performed outdoors regardless of weather conditions, requiring intermittent standing, walking, stooping
- Must lift objects over 50 lbs.
- Exposed to machinery and its moving parts
- Required to be in high places, confined spaces, and using stairs and ladders
- Exposed to fumes, chemicals, and toxic substances as a requirement of the job.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess, or obtain, within the first 18 months of employment, and maintain a level I or class I certification in Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection. Then must work toward completing all operator qualifications (Class III Water Distribution certification and Class III Wastewater Collections certification)
Salary Information: $19.41 – $25.43/hour, nonexempt
