Job Location: Denver, NC 28037

Responsibilities

• Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet project standards.
• Follow safe operation of the paver.
• Set screed sensors.
• Determine the placement of materials correctly.
• Perform daily maintenance (lubrication), keep equipment clean, and conduct safe pre‑start checks including daily fluid level checks on oil, water, and fuel.
• Maintain equipment in proper and safe working order.
• Notify supervisor if equipment needs repair.
• Conduct visual safety inspections for leaks and damage before operation.
• Plan grade cross slope requirements and understand the head of material for the screed.
• Set flow.
• Demonstrate leadership ability.
• Operate equipment while maintaining a straight line.
• Keep equipment clean.
• Maintain proper paving speed to match truck delivery.
• Adjust screed crown and strike off.
• Set up and use automatic grade and slope control.
• Use paving methods to prevent segregation.
• Have general knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems of the paver.
• Work safely and successfully in a team environment.
• Perform incidental work items and duties within other crafts.

Qualifications

• Must perform each key duty satisfactorily; reasonable accommodations may be made for disabilities.
• Requires previous experience as an Asphalt Paving Machine Operator; not an entry‑level position.
• A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
• Must understand work directions and communicate effectively with supervisors and colleagues.
• Requires 3–5 years or more of industry‑related experience, especially on roads, highways, and bridges.
• Must have knowledge of and be able to understand paving procedures.

Physical Demands

• Constant physical effort, including standing for at least eight hours per day.
• Must stand for extended periods and stoop, bend, and crouch as required.
• Frequently work with hands extended overhead and use hand power tools.
• Ability to lift at least 50 pounds frequently, carry 30 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
• Manual dexterity required for carrying generators, lumber, construction materials, forms, power tools, and hand tools.
• Maintain constant alertness to concurrent activities on the construction site.
• Frequently walk on uneven surfaces in varying weather conditions.
• Must climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.

Work Environment

• Performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Periodically exposed to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of construction projects.
• Regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
• May involve substances such as oil, asphalt, grease, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
• Must work a flexible schedule, including days and nights.
