Operating Room Technician supports surgical teams in a fast-paced operating room, ensuring sterile conditions, equipment readiness, and patient safety throughout procedures. The role requires precision, teamwork, and adherence to infection-control standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist surgical team during procedures
- Prepare and maintain sterile field per surgeon preference cards
- Arrange, organize, and inventory sterile instruments and supplies
- Follow and enforce aseptic techniques; report breaks in sterility
- Perform hand scrubbing, gowning, gloving; gown and glove team members
- Assist with patient draping, positioning, and transfer
- Pass instruments and equipment to surgeon; perform sponge, needle, instrument counts
- Identify, preserve, and prepare operative specimens
- Maintain awareness of sterile field; clean and wash instruments for sterilization
- Dispose of sharps, needles, trash, linen properly
- Operate flash autoclave; perform Bowie-Dick test; daily equipment and sterilization checks
- Adjust surgical lights, assist with OR setup, maintain clean and safe environment
Qualifications:
- Completion of an Operating Room Technician or Surgical Technologist program desired
- Current CPR certification required
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification desirable
- Training or education in surgical technology, OR procedures, or related healthcare field preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic technique and sterile field procedures
- Ability to perform essential OR functions per hospital policies and procedures
- Ability to participate in on-call rotation and report within 15 minutes
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress OR environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia, and other team members
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to patient safety
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow applicable healthcare standards
Preferred Skills:
- Training or education in surgical technology, operating room procedures, or a related healthcare field preferred
