Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX is seeking a full-time Operating Room Attendant for night shifts. Responsibilities include decontamination procedures, handling supplies, and assisting the OR team with patient transfers and equipment management.

The role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, 1–3 years hospital experience, and a Basic Life Support certification. On-site hospital environment with a focus on safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Graduate of formal program or documented on-job training.
  • 1 year to 3 years of experience in a hospital.
  • BLS certification upon hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs proper Operating Room decontamination procedures after each surgical procedure.
  • Transports and retrieves patients, beds, instruments, and supplies around the hospital and campus.
  • Dons sterile gloves and PPE to assist OR staff with transfers and positioning.
  • Organizes OR Attendant tasks based on surgical schedule and needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Education

High School Diploma or equivalent or

Graduate of formal program or documented on-job training

Experience

1 year to 3 years of experience in a hospital

Licenses and Certifications

(BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Upon Hire

Job Duties
  • Performs proper Operating Room decontamination procedures after each surgical procedure and as deemed necessary by surgical team. Collects and discards hospital waste using appropriate color-coded bag system. Performs duties using Standards Precautions and OSHA guidelines.
  • Orders, stocks, and monitors usage of routine Operating Room Attendant supplies, blankets, surgical solutions, hair covers, shoe covers, masks, scrub, brushes, and plastic liners at designated areas throughout surgical environment.
  • Transports and retrieves patients, patient floor and ICU beds, instruments, supplies, equipment, and labs to and from surgery and various other destinations throughout hospital and campus in timely and efficient manner.
  • Dons sterile gloves and any necessary personal protective equipment to assist Operating Room staff with transferring, prepping, and/or positioning surgical patient. Operates standard Operating Room equipment properly, safely and efficiently.
  • Responds to all reasonable requests, overhead pages, and beeps timely. Completes all on-call duties in timely and efficient manner and acts as first-line resource person to surgical team while on-call.
  • Organizes and prioritizes Operating Room Attendant tasks based on surgical schedule and identified need. Performs all Operating Room Attendant duties in manner that is cost effective without compromising quality patient care.
  • Participates in unit based performance improvement activities.
  • Distributes Operating Room schedule throughout hospital and campus in efficient and timely manner.
  • Monitors and maintains Operating Room stretchers, beds, scrub sinks, and hallways for cleanliness and safety.
  • Prepares, maintains, and dissembles Operating Room Attendant utility carts on daily basis.
  • Serves as technical subject matter expert, resource person, and/or preceptor to Operating Room staff and new Operating Room Attendants. Completes written clinical performance evaluations form in timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
