Job summary

JLL in Salem, NH is seeking an Operating Engineer to support CE data center operations, preventive maintenance, and continuous uptime of critical systems. The role focuses on mechanical/electrical systems with a required Tue–Sat, 3 PM–11 PM schedule.

You will inspect, troubleshoot with senior engineers, document activities, manage work orders, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance while coordinating with tenants and contractors.

Qualifications

  • Must be a Member in Good Standing with Local Union, or willing to become one.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, instructions and manuals.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical procedures and codes.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before small groups.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Access.
  • Professional interaction with tenants and contractors.
  • Ability to traverse large campus-like settings and lift 50 lbs.
  • Climb stairs/rooftops, use ladders up to 30 ft, and work at heights.
  • Able to work varied schedules and holidays; respond to site emergencies.
  • Preferred: experience with electrical, HVAC, and/or critical environments.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to safety, regulatory and company policies; escalate concerns.
  • Provide operational support including inventory control and labeling.
  • Learn the data center site to manage incidents and events affecting uptime.
  • Handle work orders, CMMS, vendor management, and customer tickets.

What this job involves -

The Operating Engineer assists with critical environment (CE) engineering operations monitoring and performing preventive maintenance and continuous operation of all data center systems. The position will have a strong focus on data center mechanicals, electrical equipment troubleshooting and repairing CE facility equipment, and learning the core functions of an operating engineer. This position is Tuesday-Saturday, 3 PM- 11 PM.

Your day-to-day tasks will include -
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance of equipment and systems (e.g., cooling systems, electrical systems, generators, fire suppression, UPS systems) to ensure the smooth operation of the data center. Monitor building management systems and respond to alarms and alerts promptly.

  • Assist in diagnosing and resolving operational issues in the data center, including electrical, mechanical, and network-related problems. Collaborate with senior engineers to troubleshoot complex technical issues and implement appropriate solutions.

  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and testing of new equipment. Assist in coordinating equipment upgrades and modifications.

  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, including work performed, materials used, and any changes made. Generate reports on equipment status, incidents, and service requests. Update equipment inventory and documentation as required.

  • Follow all relevant safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Adhere to regulatory requirements, environmental standards, and company policies. Report any safety concerns or violations to senior staff.

  • Provide general operational support to the data center team, including maintaining cleanliness and organization, monitoring inventory levels, and assisting with equipment tracking and labeling.

  • Learn and understand the data center site in-order to manage incidents and events that put the critical systems at risk.

  • Work order management, including CMMS, Vendor Management, and Customer Facing Tickets.

  • Perform additional job duties as required.

Requirements:
  • MUST be a Member in Good Standing with Local Union, or be willing to become a member upon acceptance by the Union.

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent

  • Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or governmental regulations and codes.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before small groups of tenants or fellow employees

  • Working knowledge or the capability of developing proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Microsoft Access and any other software packages.

  • Must be able to professionally interact with tenants and contractors.

  • Ability to traverse large, campus-like settings.

  • Lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.

  • Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment.

  • Using ladders up to 30 ft and working from heights.

  • Ability to Climb a ladder with a 300-lb weight limit.

  • Must be able to work different schedules.

  • Must be able to work Holidays.

  • Must be able to respond to site emergencies.

Preferred:
  • Experience with electrical systems, HVAC, and/or critical environments.
