Job summary

Koniag Operations Services, LLC is seeking an experienced Operating Engineer to operate, maintain, and repair complex mechanical systems at our Arlington, VA facility for a future new business opportunity. A Top-Secret clearance is required and the role emphasizes autonomy and senior-level expertise.

The candidate will oversee boilers, HVAC, electrical systems, and BAS, provide guidance to junior staff, and coordinate with contractors.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Technical school or vocational training in building systems, HVAC, or mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Valid 3rd Class Steam and Hot Water Heating Boiler Engineer license (DC jurisdiction) or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Engineering Services or facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain boilers, HVAC systems, chillers, cooling towers, and associated mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs on electrical equipment, pumps, motors, and building automation systems.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and HVAC system failures, implementing effective solutions to minimize downtime.
  • Monitor and adjust building systems to maintain proper temperature, humidity, and air quality levels throughout the facility.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards in the operation of mechanical systems.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of equipment operation, maintenance activities, and system performance.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving mechanical or electrical system failures, including after-hours and weekend calls as needed.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure all equipment operates within established safety parameters.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight to junior engineers and maintenance staff.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized repairs, installations, and system upgrades.
  • Manage energy conservation initiatives to optimize building efficiency and reduce operational costs.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of preventive maintenance programs.
  • Ensure proper inventory levels of parts, supplies, and materials necessary for equipment maintenance and repair.

Koniag Operations Services, a Koniag Government Services company, is seeking an experienced Operating Engineer (3rd Class) to operate, maintain, and repair complex mechanical systems at our facility in Arlington, VA. The ideal candidate will be a licensed professional with extensive knowledge of boilers, HVAC systems, electrical equipment, and safety regulations.

The Operating Engineer will serve as a senior-level licensed professional responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of complex building mechanical systems. This position requires a high level of technical expertise, autonomy, and the ability to provide oversight and guidance to junior engineers.

Principal responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Education and Experience:
Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Technical school or vocational training in building systems, HVAC, or mechanical engineering preferred

Clearance Requirement:

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Extensive knowledge of safety regulations, OSHA standards, and environmental compliance requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and system diagrams
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, testing equipment, and maintenance software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to document work and coordinate with team members and management
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift equipment up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment in decision-making
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize multiple tasks and emergency situations
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, respond to emergency calls, and provide on-call support as needed
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe work environment and following all safety protocols
Desired Skills and Competencies:
  • Experience working in federal government facilities or supporting government contracts
  • Higher-class engineering license (2nd Class or 1st Class Boiler Engineer license)
  • EPA Universal CFC certification for refrigerant handling
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS) such as Johnson Controls, Trane, or Siemens
  • Certifications in HVAC, electrical systems, or related building trades
  • Experience with energy management and sustainability initiatives
  • Supervisory or leadership experience overseeing engineering or maintenance teams
  • Experience working in secure or classified environments
