Key Responsibilities

The attending obstetric anesthesiologist administers care alone or supervises physicians-in-training (residents), certified registered nurse anesthetists and certified anesthesiologist assistants. When working alone, he/she/they examines the patient before and after anesthesia, writes pre and post anesthesia orders, confirms that the patient is ready for anesthesia before induction, manages the anesthetic period, and follows the patient as long as is appropriate in the post anesthesia period.

This role involves providing comprehensive anesthesia care for high-risk obstetric patients, including labor analgesia, managing perioperative care during obstetric procedures, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal maternal and fetal outcomes. Additionally, the obstetric anesthesiologist will provide solo obstetric and fetal anesthesia care at the Colorado Fetal Care Center, located at the Children’s Hospital Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus. As faculty members of the School of Medicine, candidates are also expected to contribute to the teaching needs of the Department and the School. This may include, but is not limited to, preparing and delivering lectures, serving as a preceptor, and providing one-on-one instruction.
