Job summary

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute seeks a Specimen Processing Technician I in Boston to process, distribute, and QA patient specimens, providing accurate information to clinicians about tests and results. This onsite role follows a Monday–Friday 11:00 p.m.

to 7:30 a.m. schedule with rotating weekends, involving loading the LIS, handling specimens, and ensuring sample integrity and timely delivery within the lab network.

Qualifications

• High School diploma required; AS or BS in a physical science preferred.
• Experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting preferred.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Proficient computer skills and ability to use LIS.

Responsibilities

• Receives patient specimens from within the institute and outside institutions.
• Distributes specimens and ensures specimen integrity.
• Loads/unloads pneumatic tube system and delivers specimens to labs.
• Records specimens in LIS by barcode or manual entry.
• Verifies labeling and addresses variances per policy.
• Communicates with providers and reference labs regarding discrepancies.
• Performs pre-analytic processing and prepares tests per requirements.
• Maintains quality checks to ensure accuracy before dispensing.
• Responds to inquiries from providers and nurses about tests.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
