Qualifications

• Valid Alabama driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Suitable automobile permitting required travel and maintenance of car insurance equal to or exceeding the State of Alabama standards for coverage.

Responsibilities

• Interview, evaluate, and assess mental health and other appropriate needs of children/families.
• Assess unmet needs of the target population and devise individualized service plans for each client.
• Collaborate closely with Oneonta City School System staff and community resources to provide or access appropriate services.
• Provide individual, group, and family therapy with emphasis on behavior modification, Strategic Family Therapy, parent education, and other therapeutic approaches as appropriate.
• Maintain accurate documentation of charts daily in an electronic medical record, including clinical assessments, case plans, treatment plans, referrals, data collections, case reviews, and follow‑up tracking.
• Present clinical assessments and treatment goals at weekly staffings with supervisor.
• Provide transportation to children and families when appropriate.
• Perform other administrative duties as required.

Job Summary

Oneonta City Schools SBMH Counselor (Working Title: Counselor) – A Master’s Level Counselor serving the Oneonta City School System. The counselor will provide assessment, individual and group therapy, conflict resolution, and other mental health services to identified students with severe emotional and/or behavioral problems that interfere with their functioning at school and/or home. The role also includes mental health care coordination for the school system.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the special needs and behavioral characteristics of children/adolescents with a serious emotional disturbance and their families.
• Knowledge of psychotherapy principles and techniques.
• Knowledge of psychotropic medications, including their uses and side effects.
• Ability to perform individual, group, and family therapy, including behavior modification, parent education, and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to make clinical decisions/recommendations in crisis situations regarding children/adolescents with a serious emotional disturbance and their families.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including Department of Human Resources, Juvenile Probation Office/Family Court, school staff, and other mental health professionals.
• Demonstrated communication skills – both expressive and written.
• Ability to organize and manage one’s own activities with minimal direct supervision.
• Ability to utilize technology to complete electronic medical records.
• Ability to work flexible hours due to the special needs of the target population and their families.
• Participation on a rotation 24‑hour on-call roster.
