Job summary

Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVESC) in Portland, Maine, seeks a Veterinary Technician Assistant in Oncology to join our compassionate team. You will support cancer care workflows, collaborate with oncology clinicians, and help with treatments, diagnostics, and client communication while maintaining patient safety and comfort in a high-touch specialty environment.

Experience in a veterinary clinical setting is preferred, and the role requires lifting up to 45 lbs and wearing

Qualifications

• Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
• Previous experience in a veterinary clinical setting preferred.
• Willingness to work in full PPE during chemotherapy sessions.
• Ability to lift up to 45 lbs.

Responsibilities

• Hold and monitor patients during chemotherapy while wearing PPE.
• Assist with CT scans, biopsies, ultrasounds, radiographs, and oncology appointments.
• Support the diagnostic process by preparing and assisting with bloodwork and imaging.
• Assist with our radioactive I131 program for hyperthyroid cats.
• Help maintain accurate medical records, treatment sheets, and controlled drug logs.
• Perform proper restraint, TPRs, and pain assessments.
• Prepare and fill medications and assist with client call-backs and discharges.
• Enter diagnostic summaries, request forms, charges, and prescriptions into EzyVet and SmartFlow.
• Support client communication, scheduling, and procedure estimates.
• Cross-train with other departments to expand your skills and support hospital flow.
