Job summary

DeKalb County Government is seeking a Traffic Control Technician to install and maintain traffic signals and signage across the County Highway System, ensuring safe travel for the motoring public.

Under the Assistant County Engineer, you will handle routine maintenance, sign fabrication, and on-call emergency duties. A CDL with air brake endorsement is required, plus ISA certification within six months of employment.

Qualifications

• Requires high school completion or equivalent.
• Three years of related experience preferred or equivalent education with relevant experience.
• Experience with electrical equipment is required.
• Valid Illinois Class A CDL with air brake endorsement required.
• Must pass pre-employment drug/alcohol testing and CDL Clearinghouse checks.
• Certification by the International Municipal Signal Association within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Provide 24-hour call coverage for emergency traffic signal maintenance and signage placement.
• Generate sign lettering and prepare sign faces for mounting.
• Install and maintain signs per MUTCD and Illinois Supplement.
• Conduct routine maintenance of traffic signals and cabinets; perform timing, troubleshooting and cleaning.
• Inspect and replace signage; monitor condition and legibility of posted signs.
• Assist in inventory, orders, and cost estimates for traffic control materials.
• Assist in traffic counts and speed studies as directed.
• Measure curves and no-passing zones for proper striping.
• Support budget development for traffic control materials.
• Assist in snow removal operations and perform Julie 811 locating as needed.

Education
