Job summary

Monmouth University is seeking an On-Call Laboratory Animal & Vivarium Technician to manage vivarium operations in support of investigators' research. The role requires daily care of animals, sanitary housing, and adherence to IACUC policies. The position supports the School of Science and operates on-site at Monmouth University Main Campus, West Long Branch, NJ.

Hourly rate is $24.00 with a flexible, on-call schedule. Pre-employment physical is required.

On-Call Laboratory Animal & Vivarium Technician


Monmouth University has an immediate opening for an On-Call Laboratory Animal & Vivarium Technician within the School of Science. The candidate will be expected to manage operational activities of the vivarium in support of investigators' research; ensure daily care of animals in an ethical, safe, and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and in compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) regulations and policies. Provide clean housing, feed, water and appropriate enrichment for animals housed in the facility; observe animals daily and report abnormal findings to appropriate individual(s); monitor environmental conditions (temperature, light cycle, noise levels, air flow, etc.) and document daily.


The final candidate will be required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Manage operational activities of the vivarium in support of investigators research.

  • Ensure daily care of animals in an ethical, safe, and sanitary manner using appropriate equipment and in compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) regulations and policies.

  • Provide clean housing, feed, water and appropriate enrichment for animals housed in the facility.

  • Observe animals daily and report abnormal findings to appropriate individual(s).

  • General handling and restraint of animals.

  • Receive and quarantine animals as necessary.

  • Observe and execute activities consistent with study protocols, standard operating procedures or laboratory methods, good laboratory practices, regulations, and safety and health practices.

  • Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, light cycle, noise levels, air flow, etc.) and document daily.

  • Provide sanitation, custodial, and other support services required for the daily operation and maintenance of the animal facility, including processing and washing soiled animal caging and supplies and preparing clean caging and equipment for distribution and use within the animal facility.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation and records of cage wash and sanitation activities.

  • Verify and document the operational status of various pieces of equipment.

  • Monitor inventory of vivarium supplies (feed, personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies) to facilitate re-ordering.

  • Coordinate hazardous waste storage and disposal with department compliance officer.

  • Learn new techniques necessary to provide research study support.

  • Assist with the needs of staff, students and faculty.

  • Coordinate hiring and scheduling of student workers.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements


  • Experience with care of rodents and aquatics systems (fish).

  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals and performing scientific procedures involving animal testing and data collection.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and have the ability to stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment with personal protective equipment.

  • Must be able to work individually or in a team environment with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.

  • Ability to work on weekends and holidays; this would include all semester breaks and holidays that classes are not in session.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule for time‑critical laboratory needs.

  • Pass a pre-employment physical.


Preferred Requirements


  • Associate's degree or higher in Zoology, Biology, Animal Husbandry or equivalent.

  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification.
