Job summary

Durham County in North Carolina is seeking an Assistant Fire Marshal to perform protective services in fire prevention, investigations, and life safety planning. You will conduct routine fire code inspections of commercial and county buildings and assist in disaster response under limited supervision.

This full-time, non-exempt role requires a relevant associate degree and four years of experience, plus NC certifications; you must maintain a valid NC driver’s license and be available for

Qualifications

• Associate degree in fire science or related field is required.
• Four (4) years of fire service experience or related experience.
• North Carolina Fire Inspector Standard Level I certification required.
• Firefighter Level II, Hazardous Materials Operations and Emergency Vehicle Driver certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspects public, commercial, and residential structures for compliance with fire codes.
• Schedules and conducts fire and life safety training sessions.
• Reviews building plans and conducts life-safety assessments.
• Assists with fire investigations and testifies as needed in court.
• Participates in Emergency Operations Center activations during disasters.
