Job summary

WSP USA is seeking on-call Field Archaeologists for a Phase I archaeological survey in Pike, Ross, and Pickaway counties, southeastern Ohio, with tasks in Louisville, KY. Schedule is 6-1 (six days on, one day off) with 9-hour days including travel between hotel and site.

Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in anthropology/archaeology or related field and field experience. Per diem covers lodging/meals; OSHA-10 may be provided; a drug test is required.

  • Archaeological field school or equivalent field experience.
  • At least 6 months of North American CRM archaeology field experience.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.
  • Self-motovated, physically able to conduct fieldwork in all weather and follow instructions.

  • Assist with Phase I fieldwork: shovel test excavation and artifact recovery.
  • Document findings with detailed notes and data collection.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and uphold WSP policies.

Job description

WSP USA is a global leader in environmental consulting, recently made stronger with the acquisition of POWER Engineers and TRC. Our Cultural Resources Management Team are located across the United States, with over 50 cultural resources professionals housed in our offices in the Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast United States.

This Opportunity

WSP has immediate openings for up to 80 on-call Field Archaeologists with our Louisville, KY, office for a long-term Phase I archaeological survey project located in Pike, Ross, and Pickaway counties, southeastern Ohio. The work schedule will be 6-1 (six days on, one day off) with 9-hour days (including daily travel between the hotel / meeting point and the job site).

Fieldwork is expected to begin in September 2026 and continue for up to four months.

This is an on-call, hourly position. Hourly rates for this project are industry competitive with time-and-a-half overtime after 40 hours.

Candidates local to Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and West Virginia are ideal due to work location and schedule, but all qualified applicants will be considered.

Your Impact
  • Assist with Phase I fieldwork, with specific tasks including:
    • Archaeological shovel test excavation
    • Recovery and identification of archaeological artifacts and other materials
    • Use archaeological field forms to record archaeological data, including type and number of artifacts, soil color (Munsell) and soil textures, and other relevant information
  • Document findings through detailed note taking
  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Strictly abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in anthropology / archaeology or a closely related field
  • Archaeological field school or similar archaeological field experience
  • At least six (6) months field experience in North American CRM archaeology
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Self-motivated, physically able to conduct all aspects of fieldwork in all weather conditions, and be able to follow instructions
Additional Information:
  • Per diem for the project is inclusive of lodging and meals; crew is responsible for acquiring their own lodging
  • Transportation on workdays from hotel to work site provided by WSP, and workday begins and ends in hotel parking lot
  • A drug test is required for this project and will be provided by WSP
  • OSHA 10 Construction training is required for this project and will be provided by WSP if needed
