WSP USA is seeking on-call Archaeological Crew Chiefs to join our Cultural Resources Management team serving the Midwest and Southeast. Positions are based in St.

Louis, MO and Louisville, KY with potential other Midwest/Southeast locations, hourly and on-call with competitive rates depending on CRM experience. Responsibilities include supervising fieldwork across Phase I–III, documenting findings, and leading field crews while ensuring safety and ethical conduct.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in anthropology or archaeology.
  • Archaeological field school or equivalent experience.
  • At least six months of supervisory CRM field experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Physically able to conduct fieldwork in all weather and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise fieldwork on Phase I, II, and III projects.
  • Perform archaeological test unit and shovel test excavations.
  • Excavate cultural features and recover artifacts.
  • Record data with field forms detailing artifact type and soil textures.
  • Lead and assist field team members; collaborate with GPS.
  • Adhere to company safety, policies, and code of conduct.

Our Cultural Resources Management Team are located across the United States, with over 50 cultural resources professionals housed in our offices in the Midwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast United States.

WSP has immediate openings for multiple On-Call Archaeological Crew Chiefs in our St. Louis, MO, and Louisville, KY offices. We will consider other locations within our Midwest and Southeast regions. Be involved in projects with our Heritage and Cultural Resources practice, as part of our Earth and Environment Team, and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. This is an on-call, hourly position. Hourly rates are industry competitive, depending on North American CRM experience and regional archaeological experience).

Your Impact
  • Assist in supervising fieldwork on Phase I, II, and III projects, with specific tasks including:
    • archaeological test unit and shovel test excavation
    • excavation of cultural features
    • recovery and identification of archaeological artifacts and other materials
    • use archaeological field forms to record archaeological data, including type and number of artifacts, oil color (Munsell) and soil textures, and other relevant information
  • Document findings through detailed note taking
  • Ability to assist/lead other field team members
  • Familiarity with GPS technology is preferred
  • Work effectively as part of a team
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
  • Strictly abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in anthropology / archaeology or a closely related field
  • Archaeological field school or similar archaeological field experience
  • At least six (6) months supervisory field experience in North American CRM archaeology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated, physically able to conduct all aspects of fieldwork in all weather conditions, and be able to follow instructions
Additional Information:
  • Single occupancy hotel rooms for the duration of the projects and paid directly by WSP
  • Flat-rate meal reimbursement, unless otherwise noted for specific projects
  • Transportation on workdays from hotel to work site provided by WSP, and workday begins and ends in hotel parking lot
