Callan Marine is seeking an Oiler to support the Mechanic in maintaining and inspecting engines and related equipment on work vessels in the Galveston area. The role involves daily checks, logs, and learning duties to progress toward Mechanic/Oiler positions.

You will work under the Chief Engineer with the Mechanic/Oilers, performing housekeeping, daily equipment checks, and safety initiatives. Remote project locations may be involved.

Qualifications

  • Preferably some experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and pumps.
  • Ability to comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to obtain TWIC.
  • Knowledge of operation of marine equipment, tools, and devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Mechanic/Oiler with day-to-day maintenance and repairs to work vessels.
  • Carry out engine room housekeeping duties.
  • Assist and perform duties under the direction of the Mechanic/Oilers.
  • Maintain housekeeping in engine room.
  • Assist with daily checks on all equipment and their mechanical parameters.
  • Assist with maintaining daily logs of equipment checks and maintenance records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

Job description

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Oiler will assist the Mechanic with engine maintenance on all floating equipment and will furthermore assist with daily checks on all equipment and the recording of their mechanical parameters. The Oiler will work together with the Mechanic and will learn the duties / responsibilities, with the objective to progress to Mechanic/Oiler position.

This position works together with the Mechanic/Oilers and will be under the direct supervision of the Chief Engineer.

  • Assist the Mechanic/Oiler in day-to-day maintenance and repairs to work vessels.
  • Carry out engine room housekeeping duties.
  • Assist and perform all duties under the direction of the Mechanic/Oilers.
  • Maintain housekeeping in engine room.
  • Assist with daily checks on all equipment and their mechanical parameters.
  • Assist with maintaining daily logs of equipment checks and maintenance records.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

The employee must have:

  • Preferably some experience operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting the following list of equipment: diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air compressors, centrifuge pumps, gear pumps, positive displacement pumps, lube oil/fuel separators, anchor winches - electrical/hydraulic.
  • Ability to comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work as directed and get your work done timely and correctly.
  • Ability to work away from home at remote project locations for extended durations.
  • Must be reliable and motivated.
  • Ability to obtain TWIC.
  • Knowledge of operation of various types of marine equipment, tools, and devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Competencies: stress management/composition, teamwork, results driven.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD's), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, Oilers must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, twisting, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting repetitively and/or for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
