Job summary

State of Maine is seeking an Oil & Hazardous Materials Responder II in Portland to join the Department of Environmental Protection's Southern Maine Regional Office. The role leads field response teams, coordinates spill cleanups, and oversees equipment and contractors during complex incidents.

The candidate will work rotating on-call with weekends, holidays, and evenings, earning a competitive annual salary with excellent state benefits and retirement options.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Geology, or other physical science and three (3) years of experience in investigation, monitoring, or inspection work in an environmental science field including at least one (1) year dealing with oil and hazardous materials technologies.
• Directly related experience may be substituted for educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

• Lead field response team during cleanup of oil, hazardous materials, and weapons of mass destruction incidents.
• Direct the cleanup of spills and oversee contractors and Department staff during large incidents.
• Keep detailed notes and write reports; operate and oversee maintenance of watercraft, response trucks, and safety equipment.
