Job summary

MedStar Health is seeking a dedicated Security Officer to safeguard patients, staff, and visitors at our Maryland hospital. The role involves patrolling campus grounds, responding to calls for assistance, and reporting on conditions that may affect safety.

Officers may obtain Special Police Officer commissions to enhance crime response capabilities in line with state and local regulations. The position requires a high school diploma or GED, with 1–2 years of related security experience

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate's degree preferred.
• 1-2 years related security or law enforcement experience required.
• MD Special Police Commission preferred and CPR certification within 90 days.

Responsibilities

• Contributes to department goals and adheres to safety standards.
• Responds immediately to emergencies and assists employees and customers.
• Performs security patrols of the facility by foot, motor vehicle, or bicycle as directed.
• Monitors lobbies, waiting areas, elevators, and entrances for security issues.
• Documents incidents and preserves evidence; reports to authorities as needed.
• Utilizes de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques to maintain safety.
• Assists with way-finding, parking, deliveries, and information requests.
• Responds to security and medical code calls and participates in investigations.
• Gathers information for investigations; testifies in legal proceedings as required.
• Monitors security systems and maintains designated posts across the facility.

Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work "off-shifts." May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response designated as an Unarmed Security Officer assigned and deployed within the hospital consistent with the limitations of the Unarmed SPO commission from Maryland State Police or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

• Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
• Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
• Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
• Monitors security and appearance of lobbies waiting areas elevators and entrances.
• Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents investigations and activities. Maintains department records reports and files as required.
• Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure staff patients visitors and all others remain safe calm and respected while onsite.
• Provides assistance for way-finding parking deliveries and other requested information for the hospital and MedStar affiliates.
• Responds to security and medical code calls. Investigates incidents and accidents. Gathers information and evidence. Notifies appropriate authorities or superiors and calls for back-up assistance as necessary.
• Testifies at legal proceedings hearings and trials.
• Works cross-functionally to ensure safe and secure environments.
• Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required. Observes and monitors conditions objects or persons which might require police action. Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety security and law violations.
• Collects and secures patient valuables and lost-and-found articles.
• Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems as directed.
• Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
• Interacts with visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
• Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
• Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimal Qualifications

Education

• High School Diploma or GED required and
• Associate's degree preferred

Experience

• 1-2 years Related security or law enforcement experience required or
• 1-2 years Medstar service in lieu of security experience required
• One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

Licenses and Certifications

• DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license. required and
• MD Special Police Commission - MDSPC Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department preferred and
• Special Police Officer - DC - SPO Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department preferred and
• If SPO must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC. required and
• IAHSS - Certification As A Security Officer Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred and
• CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required and
