Office Technician Series Overview

The Office Technician I is the entry-level position in this administrative, technical, and fiscal job series. It requires at least journey-level skills, including administrative, accounting, and technical support knowledge, while learning specific regulations and guidelines within a County department. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and accuracy are essential. Duties focus on administrative, accounting, fiscal, and customer support functions, with variation depending on the organizational unit.

The Office Technician II is a fully qualified, journey-level class. Incumbents perform duties independently with minimal supervision, possessing knowledge of standard government accounting processes and procedures, and may participate in developing administrative systems.

The Office Technician III is the advanced journey-level class, requiring high skill and expertise in complex administrative and fiscal activities, often providing lead supervision and specialized program support.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining complex financial and fiscal records
  • Performing technical accounting transactions
  • Preparing financial reports and spreadsheets
  • Verifying and reconciling accounts
  • Assisting with payroll processing and audits
  • Providing training and supervision to staff in specialized functions

Educational and Experience Requirements

Office Technician I

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of clerical experience or three years of financial record-keeping

Office Technician II

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience as Office Technician I or four years of financial recordkeeping

Office Technician III

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of experience as Office Technician II or five years of financial recordkeeping with a strong accounting background

Knowledge and Abilities

Each level builds on the previous, requiring knowledge of accounting principles, government regulations, supervisory skills, and the ability to interpret and apply policies, organize work, and communicate effectively.

Physical and Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed in an office environment, involving typical office equipment and contact with staff and the public. Physical requirements include sitting, standing, lifting, and manual dexterity.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license if driving is required
  • Background check clearance
  • Potential to serve as a Disaster Service Worker
