Job summary

UMass Memorial Health seeks a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant to implement established treatment programs across multiple settings, under supervision of an Occupational Therapist. You will supervise students and support staff while delivering group and individual therapies to maximize patient function.

The role requires an A OT degree, MA license, and COTA exam success, with potential for a signing bonus and collaboration across departments.

Qualifications

• Associates degree in Occupational Therapy from accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant school.
• Current license to practice Occupational Therapy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• Successful completion of Board Examination of COTA.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience if licensure etc. is not required.

Responsibilities

• Provides group and individual treatment to restore and/or maximize physical, psychosocial, cognitive, and daily living skills for disabled patient populations.
• Educates patients in compensatory strategies and life management skills to promote wellness.
• Educates patients, family and other caregivers in therapy programs and goals.
• Participates in patient care meetings, collaborates with team members, assists with discharge planning.
• Assesses effect of treatment rendered and communicates recommendations for program changes.

Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist, the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) is responsible for the implementation of the established treatment programs including individual and/or group treatments, utilizing a variety of therapeutic modalities to maximize the patient's level of function. Supervises and is responsible for the care provided by students and support staff. Provides care in multiple settings, participates in departmental activities, and pursues professional growth.

I. Major Responsibilities:

• 1. Provides group and individual treatment to restore and/or maximize physical, psychosocial, cognitive, and daily living skills for physically, cognitively, developmentally and/or functionally disabled patient populations, including children, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, and frail elderly, inpatient or outpatient as assigned.
• 2. Educates patients in compensatory strategies and life management skills to promote wellness and prevent health decompensation.
• 3. Educates patients, family and other caregivers in therapy programs and goals.
• 4. Participates in patient care meetings, collaborates with team members, assists with discharge planning.
• 5. Assesses effect of treatment rendered and communicates recommendations for program changes to supervising therapist.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:

Required:

• 1. Associates degree in Occupational Therapy from accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant school.
• 2. Current license to practice Occupational Therapy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
• 3. Successful completion of Board Examination of COTA.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

Work is considered medium. Position requires work indoors in a normal patient care environment.
