Job summary

South Bend Orthopaedics (SBO) in Indiana seeks a Hand Therapist to join a dedicated team delivering comprehensive upper-extremity care. You will evaluate, plan, and provide personalized hand therapy while coordinating with surgeons and therapists to optimize outcomes.

Requirements include graduation from an approved PT or OT program, a valid Indiana license, and hand therapy certification preferred but not required.

  • 2–3 years of experience in outpatient hand therapy preferred but not required.
  • Previous hand experience in diagnosing specific splinting preferred.

  • Comprehensively evaluate and develop functional, goal‑driven treatment plans considering patient factors.
  • Collaborate with team to ensure treatment plan is carried out and discharge planning.
  • Provide wound and incision care and customize orthotics for upper extremity as needed.
  • Complete documentation per departmental policy.

Overview

South Bend Orthopaedics (SBO) provides specialized care for all musculoskeletal surgery and orthopedic rehabilitation patients, as well as those suffering from work‑related and sports injuries. Founded on the principle of providing excellence in orthopedics, SBO has been serving the needs of the northern half of Indiana and southern Michigan since 1947. Services include joint replacement, sports medicine, upper and lower extremity surgery, pain management, diagnostic imaging, physical and occupational therapy. With 20 physicians and surgeons, plus multiple advanced practitioners across several locations, SBO is proud to be the trusted orthopedic expert for South Bend and the surrounding region and a proud partner practice of OrthoAlliance.

Responsibilities

Hand Therapists work closely with hand surgeons here at South Bend Orthopaedics, creating a team approach to orthopedic care. The Hand Therapist evaluates, plans for, and provides personalized therapeutic interventions in a team environment. They are responsible for communication and coordination of hand‑related treatment programs with other team members, including the patient/family.

Position Responsibilities/Standards
General
  • Attend department, clinic or company meetings as required.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
  • Work consistently in a positive and cooperative manner with fellow staff members.
  • Respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary.
  • Attend required annual in‑service programs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all company policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Identify potentially unsafe situations and notify supervisor.
Specific Duties
  • Comprehensively evaluate and develop functional, goal‑driven treatment plans considering the patient’s age, education level, family support, and cultural/psychosocial issues.
  • Participate in program development, continuous improvement, and clinical education.
  • Provide comprehensive and appropriate treatment, including periodic reassessment and goal modification, patient/family education, and ongoing discharge planning.
  • Complete custom‑made orthotics for the upper extremity.
  • Provide wound and incision care.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure that the established treatment plan is carried out, that the patient is progressing toward discharge, and that periodic reassessment and treatment modification occurs when indicated by patient status.
  • Complete all written and electronic documentation in accordance with departmental policy and procedure for timeliness, format, and content.
Additional Duties
  • Collaborate with the team to be patient‑focused, outcome‑based, and family‑centered.
  • Meet established departmental productivity standards.
  • Accurately complete specific departmental delegated duties in a timely manner.

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements for the position include the ability to frequently hear and communicate orally, see up close and at a distance, read and comprehend, stand, sit, walk, reach, handle, and/or feel objects. Must be able to climb, pull, push and kneel. Maximum unassisted lift = 50 lbs. Average lift 25–50 lbs.

Salary
