CRAVEN COUNTY SCHOOLS – Occupational Therapist

Position: Occupational Therapist

Reports to: Director of Accountability and Exceptional Children

Terms of Employment: 10 months

Pay Grade: 76

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Nature of Work

An employee in this class participates in the development, implementation, and coordination of an occupational therapy program to provide screening, evaluation, and treatment of exceptional students. The employee selects program activities appropriate to each student and resolves treatment problems independently. The employee receives general direction from the Director of Exceptional Children's Program and may exercise direct supervision over support personnel.

Education and Experience

Graduation from a four‑year accredited occupational therapy program and two years of experience or a master’s degree in occupational therapy.

Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable)
  • License as an occupational therapist in North Carolina.
  • Must pass and qualify for work in Pre‑K (NCDHHS Background Check).
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Evaluates students’ abilities through functional and behavioral assessments.
  • Provides direct therapy through activities to develop and maintain living skills.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to develop Individual Education Plans.
  • Designs or modifies special equipment to meet individual needs.
  • Instructs and monitors educational personnel, community agencies, and parents in the program.
  • Coordinates the development and evaluation of a school‑wide occupational therapy program.
  • Projects budget needs and maintains budget records.
  • Documents equipment and material needs.
  • Maintains clinical and administrative records per state guidelines and school policy.
  • Applies theory, principles, and methods of occupational therapy.
  • Utilizes knowledge of normal child development and general management practices.
  • Administers and adapts equipment and treatment for individual needs.
  • Plans, implements, administers, and coordinates therapy programs.
  • Plans and conducts on‑the‑job training and continuing education for various individuals.
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational therapy theories, principles, and methods.
  • Knowledge of appropriate evaluation tools and assistive technology.
  • Familiarity with literature, trends, and developments in occupational therapy and general medicine.
  • Understanding of feeding issues and techniques.
  • Knowledge of organizational and administrative principles.
  • Skill in adapting or designing equipment for individual needs.
  • Skill in administering treatment and selecting appropriate assessment activities.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and conduct training for individuals.
  • Ability to provide required occupational therapy services and develop individualized programs.
  • Ability to make decisions with medical, orthopedic, or neurological implications.
  • Accurate documentation of sessions.
  • Training others in simple therapy principles.
  • Maintaining adequate inventory and accurate records.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Physical Requirements

Ability to operate various equipment, including computers, power tools, and crafts. May need to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently. Must read and record various correspondence and understand procedures.

Special Requirements

Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
