TITLE: Occupational Therapist STATE CODE: 031

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under indirect supervision, provides rehabilitative and developmental therapy and support services for ambulatory or inpatient clients within a specified patient care facility or clinical program. Directs patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance; facilitates the learning of skills and functions essential for adaptation and productivity, diminish or correct pathology, and promote and maintain health.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Tests and evaluates patients for therapy and support needs; assesses availability of on‑site facilities, equipment, and/or services.
• Plans, organizes, and conducts occupational therapy programs designed to help patients regain physical or mental functioning or to adjust to their disabilities.
• Treats, educates, and counsels patients and families as appropriate regarding specific physical, mental, and/or developmental disabilities.
• Fabricates and fits splints, braces, and other adaptive devices and trains patients on use, according to therapy program.
• Monitors patient progress throughout treatment; prepares and maintains records and reports as appropriate, ensuring adherence to procedural safeguards and confidentiality requirements.
• Participates in training medical and nursing personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives.
• Requisitions supplies and equipment; cleans and repairs tools and equipment as required.
• Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
• Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to observe, assess, and record symptoms, reactions, and progress.
• Ability to effectively communicate medical information, test results, diagnoses and/or proposed treatment in a manner easily understood by the client.
• Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
• Knowledge of occupational therapy theory and practice.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and/or kinesiology.
• Knowledge of occupational therapy services, facilities and equipment.
• Ability to assess individual patient needs.
• Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
• Skill in preparing and maintaining patient records.
• Knowledge of a range of therapy methods and techniques.
• Ability to fabricate and fit a range of adaptive devices for individual patients and to instruct in their use and maintenance.
• Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
• Works normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
• Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds.
• Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor's degree; at least 6 months of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• State of Arizona Occupational Therapy Board License or licensure pending, as documented by temporary license; American Occupational Therapy Association Registration.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Work environment involves no physical risks or hazardous conditions.
• Work environment involves slight physical risks that require basic safety precautions (safety glasses, lab coats, rubber gloves, etc.).
• Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following detailed safety precautions (such as wearing respirators, handling hazardous materials, and working with industrial machinery).
