Job Description

Responsible for providing occupational therapy services to students, ensuring maximum independence in personal care and classroom activities, and managing adaptive equipment within the school system.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy approved by the Georgia State Board.

Certification or Licensure: Current license in Occupational Therapy issued by the State of Georgia.

Skills: Knowledge of proper lifting techniques; pleasant personality, cooperative attitude, physical and stamina to perform essential duties; CPR and First Aid certificate preferred but training will be provided.

Work Experience: Two years of experience preferred but not required; experience with moderate/severe/profound students and students with Autism preferred.

PRIMARY DUTY

This position is responsible for providing occupational therapy services per student needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Evaluate each student using standardized tests, customized measures, and/or observation.
  • Document evaluation results and provide written input to appropriate individuals.
  • Participate in Placement Committee Meetings.
  • Use a team approach to planning and treatment with school personnel, families, and agencies.
  • Utilize treatment procedures with meaningful and functional activities that improve functioning in visual, perceptual, cognitive, physical, and sensory awareness and processing skills.
  • Help students achieve maximum independence in personal care and classroom activities.
  • Use functional activities to help students acquire homemaking and vocational skills and appropriate work habits through pre‑vocational activities.
  • Support procedures to instruct students in the use of adaptive equipment and devices.
  • Maintain records and charts of student progress in prescribed OT programs.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with parents and school staff for follow‑through of OT goals in the classroom.
  • Provide training to appropriate persons regarding effective methods for mainstreamed special needs students.
  • Design and construct adaptive equipment and devices for students and/or the classroom.
  • Order supplies and materials, maintain inventory.
  • Attend staff development and professional seminars to upgrade skills.
  • Assist in designing an effective daily work schedule for students with disabilities.
  • Possess knowledge of assistive technology, augmentative communication devices, adapted equipment, positioning, accessibility, and barriers.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisors or relevant personnel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Moderate noise level. Requires lifting or moving up to 25 pounds occasionally. Regularly required to talk, hear, walk, stand, and sit.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must have available private transportation; moving instructional equipment and materials between sites daily.
