Job summary

Oklahoma State University is looking for a professional to provide expertise in Environmental, Health and Safety programs at the OSU-Stillwater campus. This role involves developing safety plans, conducting training, and ensuring compliance with laws and policies.

Qualifications

Job description

Location: OSU-Stillwater campus.

About This Position

Under the direction of the Director of EHS, this role provides professional expertise in the operation of Environmental, Health and Safety programs to help ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, national consensus standards and OSU safety policies and procedures.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to legal guidelines
  • Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety
  • Evaluate practices, procedures and facilities to assess risk and adherence to the law
  • Conduct training and presentations for health and safety matters and accident prevention
  • Monitor compliance to policies and laws by inspecting employees and operations
  • Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover causes and handle worker's compensation claims
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures
  • Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics – provide oversight of Occupational Safety programs including performing safety audits and inspections
  • Provide consultation relative to Occupational Safety

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Engineering or related field (degree must be conferred on or before the agreed upon start date)
  • Three years of experience working as a safety professional, an Industrial Hygienist and/or in Public Health work
  • Valid driver's license (to operate an OSU vehicle as required)
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED (or ability to obtain within six months of employment); additional recertifications will be provided as required to remain up-to-date
  • Must pass pre‑employment physical exam and be physically capable of wearing personal protective equipment, standing and/or walking for long periods, stooping, bending, and climbing ladders; must be able to access all levels of construction through use of construction equipment and discern colors and read small print
  • Skills, proficiencies, and/or knowledge:
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
    • Ability to supervise and train employees, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
    • Expert knowledge of OSHA Regulations
    • Working knowledge of CDC and American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Regulations and Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL)
    • Computer skills, including operation and utilization of various software programs such as MS Office
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from University Personnel and others
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Safety, Public Health, Worker's Compensation, Industrial Hygiene
  • Five or more years of related work experience that includes occupational safety, accident investigation & analysis, and worker's compensation efforts (especially in a research setting or higher education)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Certified or eligible for ABSA (RBP or CBSP)
  • Member/Associate of AIHA
Additional Responsibilities
  • Supervisor of three full-time staff members
  • Carry department‑issued cell phone due to communication expectations of the position
