Job summary

Isuzu North America is seeking an Engineer II or Sr level in Plymouth, MI to advance onboard diagnostics calibration development and validation for diesel/ powertrain applications. You will work with cross-functional teams to implement diagnostic strategies, ensure regulatory compliance, and perform testing and verification activities.

The role emphasizes independent judgment, timely project execution, and mentoring junior staff while coordinating with internal stakeholders across product

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in automotive or commercial vehicle engineering.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in OBD systems, engine controls, calibration, or powertrain development.

Job description

OBD Diagnostics & Engine Management Systems supports the development, implementation, validation, and maintenance of onboard diagnostics (OBD) strategies and engine management system calibrations for diesel powertrain applications. This role collaborates with cross-functional engineering teams to develop diagnostic calibrations, support regulatory compliance activities, perform testing and validation, and assist in the execution of diagnostic development plans. Position provides guidance to more junior staff.

Contributes to diagnostic strategy development, calibration integration, certification support, and issue resolution while ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and company standards. Must be able to use independent judgment extensively.

  • Supports execution of OBD diagnostic development plans and project deliverables.

Develops, validates, and troubleshoots diagnostic strategies and calibrations. Assists in the development and execution of OBD verification procedures. Tracks diagnostic development status and supports project schedule adherence.

  • Develops and maintains diagnostic calibration data for assigned powertrain programs.

Supports integration of new diagnostic software and calibration features.

Collaborates with calibration engineers, software developers, and product development teams to resolve diagnostic issues. Participates in technical reviews and working group meetings.

  • Supports communication of diagnostic requirements, program timing, and technical issues within the product development team. Assists with implementation of future model year diagnostic requirements. Coordinates with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with OBD regulations and vehicle requirements.
  • Participates in calibration comparison reviews and validation activities. Maintains engineering records and project documentation.
  • Evaluates competitor vehicles and diagnostic systems for benchmarking purposes. Researches emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory developments. Prepares technical summaries and reports for engineering management.

Education, Experience & Training
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or related engineering discipline; Master’s degree is preferred but not required
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in automotive or commercial vehicle engineering
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in OBD systems, engine controls, calibration, or powertrain development
KNOWLEDGE
  • Extensive knowledge of the latest government regulations and optimum strategies for OBD on light/heavy duty diesel engines
  • Thorough understanding of OBD systems and engine management systems
  • Advanced knowledge of diesel engine controls, emissions systems, and diagnostic strategies
  • Knowledge of applicable OBD regulations and industry standards
  • Understanding of calibration development and validation processes
  • Familiarity with emissions and environmental testing methodologies including engine dyno testing
Skills & Abilities
  • Advanced experience using calibration and measurement tools such as ETAS INCA or similar systems
  • Thorough working knowledge of MATLAB/Simulink
  • Extensive hands-on experience with CAN communication and CAN data acquisition/analysis tools
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements and engineering specifications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering teams
  • Excellent PC skills in Microsoft Office applications and standard engineering software tools
PHYSICAL STANDARDS

The employee must be able to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer. This is primarily a sedentary position in a controlled office environment. However, it also regularly requires reaching, stooping, crawling under vehicles, as well as the use of automotive repair shop tools and equipment to perform repair procedure validation and development on actual medium duty commercial vehicles. Employee must be able to perform occasional light lifting (5-25 lbs).

Position requires 20-30% domestic and international travel, including overnight stays. Requires full-time on-site work responsibilities.

We are looking to hire an Engineer II or Sr level in our Plymouth, MI location.

The pay scale for an Engineer II in Plymouth, MI is $87,448 to $111,496. The pay scale for an Sr. Engineer in Plymouth, MI is $97,063 to $123,755. The base salary will be determined based on a variety of factors, such as relevant experience and education.
