Job summary

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) in Michigan seeks an experienced engineer to plan and conduct DDV testing to support OBD certification and to review/approve official tests.

The role includes creating and compiling OBD certification documents, handling agency Q&A, participating in industry meetings, and aligning stakeholders to ensure on-time certification that supports production plans. Travel up to 20% may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred in a related engineering discipline.
  • 10+ years automotive engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of OBD certification/development experience.
  • Experience with OBDII/HDOBD regulations and emission testing.
  • Ability to coordinate cross-functional teams and travel as needed.
  • Knowledge of compliance activities (PVE J1/J2/J3) is beneficial.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE ROLE

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field of study
  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field of study

Related Industry Experience Requirements:

  • 10+ years of automotive engineering experience
  • 5+ years of OBD certification and/or development experience

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience in OBDII/HDOBD regulations (13 CCR §1968.2 and/or 13 CCR §1971.1), communication architectures (J1979. J1939), monitor strategies, readiness/MIL concepts, and OBD compliance activities (PVE J1/J2/J3)
  • Experience with vehicle emission testing (40 CFR §1066)
  • Strong analytical skills and data-driven decision-making abilities
  • Monitor federal and state regulations related to OBD certification / compliance
  • Coordinate and align cross-functional stakeholders
  • Be capable of understanding powertrain and emission control system operations and be highly capable of quickly understanding and interpreting technical problems and issues as represented in testing system problems
  • Flexibility in handling multiple projects concurrently
  • Travel: up to 20% of time domestically and internationally is possible
  • Preferred: Prior experience communicating directly with CARB OBD Certification staff related to OBD certification applications
