OB Surgical Tech – Job Code: SS1241 – PRN Nights.

Job Summary

The Obstetrical (OB) Surgical Technician is a member of the obstetrical healthcare team who provides technical support to the obstetrician/surgeon and registered nurse in the operating and delivery room settings. This position assists in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures and provides the appropriate instrumentation necessary for the obstetrician/surgeon to perform these procedures. The OB Surgical Tech is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and physicians’ techniques. Provides assistance in the maintenance of aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure and maintains a par level of supplies within the department. Performs indirect and direct patient care of the neonate, and female patients under the direct supervision of a RN. Provides patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain par level of supplies within the department.
  • Perform indirect and direct patient care of neonates and female patients under RN supervision.
  • Provide patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit.
  • May be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
  • Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred.
Licensure
  • Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code 54.1-2956.12.
  • MUST hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board‑approved pathway (military training, DOL‑registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
  • Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.
Additional Skills / Requirements
  • Ability to create and maintain a sterile field.
  • Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic understanding of medical terminology.
  • Computer skills.
Competencies
  • Communication: Collaborates with the leadership team to identify and resolve unit issues. Keeps co‑workers and intra‑op staff informed of any updates/issues. Follows written instructions as needed.
  • Technical Competency: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served. Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application. Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist. Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
Physical Demands

Medium to Heavy Physical Demand: The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Requires proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift, push, or pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.

  • May require the use of safety equipment, such as HEPA mask, for infection prevention.
  • On‑call responsibilities as directed.
  • Ability to travel between campus buildings, remote facilities, and out of town as needed.
