(#o471yfwu) Summer Intern, Traffic Engineering Design

The Engineering Department is looking for a Traffic Engineering intern to join their team! The Engineering Department provides high quality and cost-effective engineering and architectural design services in a timely manner and in conformance with applicable codes, regulations, and Port Authority technical standards to deliver the Capital and Operating Programs to our client departments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field investigations, inventories, and data collection throughout various PA facilities.
  • Assist in studies to improve traffic flow for motorists and pedestrians.
  • Support project teams by preparing basic documents, spreadsheets, drawings, and presentation materials.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment at a college or university at the time of the internship
  • Major in Civil Engineering with a focus on Transportation
  • Valid Driver's License (field work is required at various Port Authority facilities)

Desired Qualifications

  • Undergraduate students entering Junior or Senior Year preferred; highly motivated Sophomore-level students with an interest in Traffic Engineering will also be considered
  • Ability to create and update drawings using AutoCAD
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and organization skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Interest in contributing to the success of the New York and New Jersey region
  • Interest in public service and/or transportation
  • Willingness to learn and collaborate
  • The start date will be Thursday, May 28, 2026
  • The internship will last approximately 12 weeks, ending on Friday, August 21, 2026
  • This is a full-time internship (5 days per week at 7.25 hours per day)
  • In accordance with Port Authority policy, this position permits interns to work remotely a maximum of one day per week. In person collaboration is essential to how the Port Authority conducts business and regular in-office days or team collaboration days may be required depending on business needs. Some internships may require interns to be fully in-person.
