Job description

Electrical Engineer – Space Systems
Location: Orlando, FL (Onsite)
Employment Type: Full-Time

Our client is a rapidly growing space technology startup seeking an Electrical Engineer with a minimum of 7 years of experience to lead the electrical development of an innovative space-based LiDAR system. This role is based in Orlando, FL.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary engineering team to design a next-generation LiDAR payload for Earth observation, building on existing designs and focusing on electrical, power, and avionics systems. The role spans the full development lifecycle from preliminary design through integration, assembly, and test (AIT), as well as flight implementation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead development of electrical, data, and power systems for a space-based LiDAR payload
  • Advance and adapt LEO LiDAR electrical designs for next‑generation Earth observation missions
  • Develop FPGA‑based systems including peripherals such as DDR, Flash, EEPROM, ADC, DAC, and high‑speed transceivers
  • Contribute to payload timing systems to synchronise laser pulses with imaging systems and maintain UTC synchronisation onboard
  • Design payload avionics and power regulation/distribution systems
  • Work closely with laser manufacturers to ensure system‑level performance requirements are met
  • Support flight hardware build, testing, and space qualification campaigns
  • Identify design risks and support radiation and environmental analysis for LEO space applications
  • Perform circuit tolerance analysis using hand calculations and SPICE tools
  • Generate test plans, test reports, and documentation for design reviews (PDR, CDR, MRR, FRR)
  • Contribute to interface control documents (ICDs), design documentation, test procedures, and proposal materials including estimates
Required Qualifications
  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering + 7 years of experience, or M.S./Ph.D. + 5 years in related aerospace/space systems roles
  • Experience in electrical design for space applications and qualification campaigns
  • Strong background in data and power systems, command & data handling (C&DH) architectures, and spacecraft electrical interfaces
  • Proficiency with low‑voltage power electronics, high-reliability connectors, high‑speed signals, and high-current power delivery
  • Experience with grounding strategies and EMC/EMI analysis
  • Ability to translate system‑level requirements into detailed engineering design specifications
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with lasers, sensors, and board-level design
  • Background in analog and digital circuit card assembly (CCA) design
  • Experience in laser systems and radiation effects analysis is highly desirable
Additional Requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Ability and willingness to work onsite in Orlando, FL
