City of Dallas is seeking a WIC-based Nutrition Specialist to determine eligibility and provide Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessments (VENA) to eligible participants. You will counsel on nutrition, perform lab assessments, and help disburse benefits while promoting breastfeeding.

Ideal candidates will have a Bachelor's in foods/nutrition and at least two years in customer service, with bilingual English/Spanish preferred. Availability for some evenings and Saturdays is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with nutrition focus and life sciences courses.
  • Two years of customer or client service experience.
  • Knowledge of WIC and community care programs.

Responsibilities

  • Determine WIC eligibility based on interviews and assessments.

  • Refer participants to healthcare providers as needed.

Overview

Direct report of WIC Clinic Supervisor, follows WIC policies and procedures to determine eligibility for the WIC program and provides Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) to eligible participants.


Provides nutrition counseling, lab assessments, and determinations for the disbursement of benefits. Support and promote a culture of breastfeeding. Utilize the Power of Influence (P.O.I.) principles when providing WIC services.



Essential Functions


  • Determines WIC Program eligibility based on interview and assessment of WIC Program nutritional risk criteria, including health history, growth patterns, iron status, weight gain patterns, and dietary adequacy.

  • Provides Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment for low and moderate risk WIC participants.

  • Determines the appropriate WIC food package for WIC participants.

  • Guides the participant's choice for their next WIC nutrition education activity.

  • Approves the issuance of non-contract formula to WIC participants.

  • Teaches WIC group nutrition education classes as necessary. Supports women during a normal breastfeeding experience.

  • Identify breastfeeding experiences that are not the norm and make an immediate, referral to the International Board Certified Lactation consultant. (IBCLC).

  • Refer WIC participants to appropriate health care provider and documents follow-up.

  • Issues breastfeeding equipment (electric breast pumps, manual breast pumps) and aids (nursing pads, large flanges) according to policies.

  • Uses positive customer service skills to resolve internal participant conflicts and complaints.

  • Performs other clinic duties, including lab, income, benefits (EBT) and receptionist as necessary in the absence of other team members.

  • Acts as Supervisor in the absence of the Supervisor and makes decisions necessary to facilitate clinic operations.

  • Communicates effectively, uses time management skills and meets deadlines, including checking e-mails daily and entering time daily into Workday.

  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.



Minimum Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 12 hours in food and nutrition and 6 hours in life sciences.


Experience

Two (2) years' experience in customer or client service.


Licenses and Certifications

State of Texas Driver's License.


Special Requirements

Availability to work some evenings and Saturdays. English/Spanish bilingual skills preferred.


Must comply with WIC state policies regarding immunizations. Successful completion of WIC Nutrition modules during probation. Successfully completes the LA Breastfeeding promotion training, as assigned.

  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of WIC and community care programs and working with women, infants, and children.

  • Knowledge of evaluation practices and analysis for personal goal setting.

  • Ability to interpret weight gain grids, lab results, and other assessments.

  • Ability to communicate program standards.

  • Ability to effectively teach, guide, and counsel participants.

  • Ability to assist and direct various community members and patrons.

  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.



Salary Range

$50,731.20 - $57,636.80


The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
