Mapleton Public Schools is seeking a Nutrition Services Kitchen Manager in Training at the 7480 Broadway campus in Denver, CO. The role develops managerial competencies in menu planning, food production, inventory, and software use while supporting daily meal service.

SUMMARY

Responsible for supporting the district food service program by preparing meals according to planned menus and recipes, serving meals, cleaning, and maintaining the kitchen, assisting with food deliveries, and operating the point of sale while learning and completing manager level responsibilities with direct oversight.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Participate in hands-on training to develop proficiency in the district department software for meal planning, forecasting participation, and determining food production quantities according to the district menu template.
  • Prepare food according to planned menus and tested recipes following all applicable food safety standards.
  • Ensure all special diet menus and procedures are followed.
  • Serve students meals according to standardized recipe instructions following all applicable food safety standards and Child Nutrition Program regulations.
  • Receive training in and assist with completing daily production records, meal counts, temperature logs, deposits, and other required documentation using the district department software.
  • Clean and maintain a safe and sanitary kitchen.
  • Ensures proper sanitation and sterilization of utensils, equipment and facilities.
  • Foster a team environment by assisting coworkers with scheduled work demands.
  • Assist with checking in food deliveries including quality assurance, labeling, and preparing food and supplies for storage.
  • Develop competency in using the district department software to order food and supplies in compliance with established ordering schedules.
  • Develop competency in checking in food deliveries by verifying orders and verifying invoices. Use district department software to receive food and supplies into inventory.
  • Learn and apply proper and accurate inventory controls at the assigned kitchen, including monthly inventory of kitchen supplies and food using the district department software.
  • Maintain and care for kitchen equipment.
  • Check equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition and notify the Nutrition office where repairs or replacements are needed.
  • Communicate and interact positively with students, teachers, staff, parents, and community.
  • Utilize point of sale system to record sales using the district department software.
  • Direct and oversee kitchen staff while performing management duties.
  • Fill in for managers/staff in other kitchens as assigned.
  • Upholds all operating standards for Nutrition Services.
  • Demonstrate progress toward independently performing managerial functions related to menu planning, food production, ordering, inventory management, and software utilization.
  • Attend staff development meetings as required.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

High school diploma or equivalent.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

One year of experience in food service

PREFERRED EDUCATION, FORMAL TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

School food service experience.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATION
  • Criminal background check required for hire.
  • SERVSafe Manager Certification (or equivalent) within 90 days of hire.
KNOWLEDGE & OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to comprehend, prepare, and communicate information in English, both orally and in writing, to fulfill the essential responsibilities of the role.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Customer service and public relations skills.
  • Personal computer and keyboarding skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of personal hygiene/health.
  • Knowledge of nutrition services, child nutrition, and Health Department guidelines preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions, use time efficiently, demonstrate attention to detail, follow instructions, and respond to management direction.
  • Ability to work with students with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies, Superintendent policies, and building and department procedures.
EQUIPMENT & VEHICLES USED

Operating knowledge of mixer, dishwasher, slicer, computer, ovens, and all other commercial kitchen equipment preferred at hire; required within 3 weeks after hire

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers and peripherals preferred.

Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, etc. preferred.

TRAINING

Mandatory Title IX training is required by the Colorado Department of Education and for all public-school employees. Title IX training addresses harassment, discrimination, and bullying. Completing these mandatory Title IX training courses ensure we are meeting state requirements while continuing to foster a culture of safety and belonging across our schools.

SUPERVISORY/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING

Work is assigned by the supervisor. Requires independent judgment, nutrition knowledge, and supervisory skills to properly calculate needed food, ensure preparation of nutritious food, direct the work of kitchen employees, and maintain accurate records. Decision making is guided by health department, federal, and District guidelines, policies, and procedures. Decision making requires collaboration with supervisor when necessary. Errors in decision making could result in an unhealthy cafeteria environment, insufficient food supply, and errors in bookkeeping. The supervisor is occasionally involved in decision-making.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES

Duties may require cross training in one or more of the following: food preparation line, operating cash register, maintain kitchen equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 - 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to extreme heat, moving mechanical parts, and the risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, and extreme cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, compare, copy, and use interpersonal skills. Frequently required to analyze, coordinate, and compile. Occasionally required to compute, negotiate, evaluate, and instruct.
