Job summary

The Nutrition Lab Technician at Children’s Colorado supports the care team by ensuring accurate, safe handling, storage, preparation, and distribution of formulas and human milk for hospitalized patients. This role also provides basic education to families in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Tasks include aseptic preparation and order verification, timely delivery of feeds, and collaboration with RDs, RNs, and care teams to ensure safety and compliance in the lab and during feeding.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Independently prepares, fortifies and/or skims and measures human milk and/or formula using aseptic technique.
• Calculates recipes for human milk and/or formula; recipes double-checked by a second team member.
• Retrieves and verifies patient orders in the EMR and ensures accuracy with provider instructions.
• Delivers prepared human milk/formula to designated locations accurately, securely and on time.
• Communicates with leadership, RDs, RNs and care teams to clarify orders and support feeding plans.

This role also provides basic education and guidance to families in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• Location/Dept: CSH Lactation and Formula Lab
• Job Details: PRN - not eligible for benefits
• Shift: Varies based on needs of department. May be scheduled to work 10 hour shifts or 6 hour shifts pending staffing needs (8 AM-6:30 PM, 8:30 AM-7 PM, and 11 AM-5:30 PM), with weekend and holiday commitments

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

• 1. Independently prepares, fortifies and/or skims, and accurately measures human milk and/or formula using aseptic technique, following standardized recipes, provider’s orders, safety guidelines, and department procedures.
• 2. Performs arithmetic calculations for human milk and/or formula recipes which may include additives and fortifiers. Recipes are double checked by a second team member to ensure accuracy.
• 3. Retrieves, reviews, and verifies patient human milk and/or formula orders in the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring accuracy and alignment with provider instructions and departmental protocols.
• 4. Delivers prepared human milk and/or formula to designated locations in an accurate, timely, and secure manner, following appropriate protocols.
• 5. Communicates with leadership, RD’s, RNs, and care teams through rounding or directly, to clarify orders, resolve discrepancies, support feeding plans, prioritize preparation workflow, and promote safe storage and administration practices.
• 6. Addresses phone calls, EMR and in-person inquiries with professionalism, customer service, and emotional intelligence, escalating concerns appropriately.
• 7. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, environmental and infection control standards, adheres to regulatory requirements and maintains environmental cleanliness of the human milk and formula lab areas in accordance with regulatory and policy requirements.
• 8. Reports errors and adverse events using the hospital variance reporting program (QSRS).
• 9. Maintains daily workflow to meet established priorities and production requirements and completes daily operations tasks utilizing assigned applications and software.
• 10. Receives and maintains donor human milk from the community for delivery to the Mother’s Milk Bank of Colorado through designation as a human milk bank outreach center.
• 11. May provide education and guidance to parents and care teams regarding proper labeling, transport, storage, and handling of human milk to support safety and compliance.

Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience. Hourly Range: $18.26 to $27.40
