Job Summary
She/he has the authority, accountability and responsibility for nursing and administrative management of the clinical areas.
Essential Functions
- Assumes administrative responsibilities of directing nursing service during absence of VP of Nursing and/or Assistant VP of Nursing.
- Notifies VP of Nursing and/or designee concerning unusual administrative or clinical nursing problems when they occur.
- Performs administrative duties as directed by VP of Nursing and/or Assistant VP of Nursing.
- Assists in establishing standards of nursing care.
- Assists in determining appropriate nursing requirements to provide high quality nursing care. This includes identifying learning needs of staff.
- Provides staff in-service and/or refers educational needs to the Nursing Education Department.
- Assists in recruitment of nursing personnel, makes recommendations for hiring.
- Participates in evaluating nursing staff according to established procedures and makes recommendations as indicated.
- Analyzes effectiveness of nursing and auxiliary personnel to improved patient care through maximum utilization of staff, time, abilities and resources.
- Reviews patient records to determine compliance with charting policies concerning documentation of nursing care and patient.
- Ascertains efficiency and adequacy of supplies in evening/night and as needed.
- Performs Employee Health functions after 4 p.m. daily, weekends and holidays.
- Strives to maintain good working relationships with all hospital personnel.
- Establishes good rapport through diplomacy and tactfulness.
- Completes nursing classification sheet prior to beginning of shift.
- Assigns staff accordingly, determining method of care delivery on unit.
- Recommends and/or implements disciplinary action according to standards, for all staff on shift.
- Makes recommendation for terminations and transfers.
- Makes rounds to each unit throughout each shift, evaluating status of each patient on report, accidents, new admissions, environmental evaluation, etc.
- Determines necessity of informing physician of patient's condition and necessity of medical intervention.
- Assumes any duties defined in Registered Nurse job description.
- Makes arrangements for emergency ambulance transfers after 4 p.m., nights, weekends, and holidays, completing required documentation.
- During the absence of other departments, may provide service and/or demonstrate use of equipment to staff, i.e., take EKG's, respiratory treatments, application of splints, sends specimens to outside laboratory for emergency analysis, etc.
- Makes rounds with on-call physician/NP as requested during evening.
- Informs physician/NP of the status of patients on report and gives background.
- Practices Standard Precautions.
- Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
- Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
- Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital’s policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital ID.
- Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.
- Completes mandatory annual learning (Learning Harbor) within deadline.
- Personally adheres to Burke C.A.R.E.S. philosophy by demonstrating compassion, accountability, respect and exceeding expectations through service excellence.
Qualifications
- BSN Required
- MAS Preferred 4-6 years 5+ nursing practice Required and 1-3 years 2 years of acute care and/or rehabilitation nursing Required and 1-3 years 2 years supervisory experience Preferred
- Interacts with all nursing staff, clinical staff, department heads, community agencies, college instructors from affiliating agencies and students
- The ability to implement the nursing process; plan, implement, evaluate and supervise patient care.
- Registered Nurse New York - New York State Board of Nursing Required BLS - American Heart Association Required ACLS Preferred
