Job summary

Parkland Health and Hospital System is seeking a Nursing Student - PRN to support patient care under RN supervision. You will perform basic hygiene, vital signs, and assist with activities of daily living to deliver patient-centered care on a 12-hour shift schedule.

The role requires current enrollment in an accredited nursing program and CPR certification. You will participate in patient advocacy, documentation in EPIC, and may train nursing students as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited nursing school with documentation of fundamentals of nursing.
  • Effective 5/12/2023, incumbents may remain while obtaining RN license and be placed into a program up to 6 months from graduation.
  • Must have current healthcare provider CPR card from AHA/Red Cross/Military Training Network.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic patient care activities under RN direction, including hygiene, unsterile treatments, vital signs, ROM exercises.
  • Assist with ambulation, feeding, and daily activities to support patient-centered care.
  • Document activities and patient status per unit standards and EPIC procedures.
  • Escorts patients, transports, and provides translation support when applicable.
  • Serve as a resource for Nursing Students PRN and assist with training/orientation.
  • Identify workflow improvements and communicate suggestions to supervisor.

Location: Parkland: 15th FLR BLK 600

Shift- 12 hour shifts for days
Must be able to cover 1 shift per week or 2 per pay period
Primary Purpose

Performs specified patient care activities and basic clerical tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse and is committed to the provision of patient centered/patient valued care.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIOS
Education
  • Must be currently enrolled and maintain enrollment in an accredited nursing school with proper documentation of basic fundamentals of nursing (ex. Transcript, grade report, etc.). Effective 5/12/2023, current incumbents in transition to a nurse residency program may remain in this role while obtaining their RN license and being placed into a program. This is not to exceed 6 months from date of graduation.
Experience
  • None.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following:
    • American Heart Association
    • American Red Cross
    • Military Training Network
Skills or Special Abilities
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and possess good oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities
  • Performs specified patient care activities, under the direction of a Registered Nurse, including providing basic hygiene care, unsterile treatments, taking vital signs, and range of motion exercises. Lifts, ambulates, and feeds patients in accordance with the provision of patient centered/patient valued care, while providing optimal care services to patients and their families.
  • Serves as a patient advocate by responding to a patient's needs and special requests. Maintains open communication, and honors patient's rights and confidentiality, while providing optimal service to patients and their families.
  • Makes appropriate notations and records activities performed, such as vital signs, patient ambulation, feeding outcomes, etc. in accordance with standards established by the nursing unit.
  • Monitors ongoing patient status and responds to a patient's change in condition by notifying and assisting nurses and other health team members in handling patient care needs.
  • Maintains, updates, and utilizes knowledge of sanitation, infection control, safety, supplies and equipment usage to optimize customer care and services. Monitors conditions of patient environment and equipment, i.e. wheelchairs, bed rails, scales, floor conditions, and corrects the condition and/or reports the deficiencies or defects for immediate correction as appropriate.
  • Performs basic data entry functions according to EPIC procedures, such as ordering diets, laboratory tests, and x-rays as appropriate.
  • Escorts patients to other areas, clean designated or special areas, provide or request translation services when applicable, perform quality control checks, and deliver patient specimens when applicable in order to provide optimal patient care.
  • Serves as a resource for other Nursing Students - PRN by assisting with their training and orientation, providing guidance as needed, and other administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and procedures or methods and makes recommendations to supervisor and/or nursing department for appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity, efficiency, and customer satisfaction that support the overall goals of the nursing unit, the hospital and Parkland.
  • Takes responsibility for own education and professional growth by attending in-service sessions, department meetings, workshops, and reading magazines or journals on nursing care. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impacts the patient care area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
  • Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
  • Maintains an active nursing student status at an accredited school of nursing throughout employment as a Nursing Student - PRN.
