Position Overview

The Registered Nurse assumes primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff. The RN maintains standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, external governing and credentialing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards.

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse assesses the patient using the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implements interventions, and evaluates outcomes consistent with policy and the client’s condition, promoting, maintaining, and restoring physical and mental health and preventing illness. The RN interprets age/disability specific information and coordinates safe delivery of medication following policies, physicians' orders, and current practice. The RN is responsible for accurate reporting and documentation of the patient’s symptoms, responses, and progress, and assumes responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and licensure. All duties are performed in accordance with Joint Commission, Federal and State regulations, Oceans' Mission, policies and procedures, and Performance Improvement Standards.

Essential Functions

• Utilize the nursing process: assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation.
• Formulate nursing interventions toward an individualized plan of care and treatment modalities.
• Identify risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes individualized to the client, including discharge planning.
• Prescribe interventions to attain expected outcomes and evaluate their effectiveness.
• Conduct ongoing assessment of clients from admission to discharge.
• Initiate medical/psychiatric crisis intervention to stabilize and ensure the well‑being of the patient's conditions.
• Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions.
• Implement nursing interventions identified in the plan of care tailored to the patient’s needs.
• Apply interventions to progress the patient toward wellness and address maintenance of wellness.
• Administer medications safely, provide education on prescribed medications, and recognize signs and symptoms of adverse drug reactions.
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and decision‑making for quality nursing care.
• Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes.
• Transcribe and implement physician orders according to facility policy; document care, progress, and response to intervention accurately, thoroughly, and concisely.
• Follow up on client care responsibilities, communicate incomplete assignments and current client needs to staff to assure continuity of care.
• Implement staff assignments and delegation of duties using appropriate judgment and knowledge.
• Demonstrate a positive willingness to assist staff and patients and advocate for patient needs and safety.
• Utilize nursing knowledge to meet the needs of the facility, patient population, and staff.
• Float among various clinical services, where qualified and competent, and perform other duties and projects as assigned.
