Job summary

UPMC Altoona is launching the Mercy School of Nursing at Altoona and seeks casual Assistant Nursing Instructors to help shape this new program. The role is two 8-hour days per week (8am–5pm) with mentorship from experienced faculty.

The instructor will provide high-quality clinical instruction, evaluate student performance, and support diverse learners while modeling professionalism in a hospital-linked academic setting.

Qualifications

• BSN required.
• 3 years of clinical practice required.
• Precepting experience required; teaching in prelicensure programs preferred.
• MSN enrolled with a 3-year completion plan.
• Current Pennsylvania RN licensure.
• BLS/CPR certification per AHA standards with 30 days to hire.
• Act 33/Act 34/Act 73 clearances renewed.
• Approval of PA State Board of Nursing required for appointment.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality clinical instruction reflecting best practices in nursing education.
• Create meaningful clinical learning assignments based on student needs.
• Model critical and reflective thinking in the clinical environment.
• Evaluate student performance with timely, constructive feedback.
• Support diverse learners with dignity, respect, and individualized teaching strategies.
• Coach students on cultural diversity, civility, and professional behavior.
• Serve as a professional role model for students in clinical settings.
• Maintain open communication with faculty, clinical staff, and the broader healthcare team.
• Foster an inclusive learning environment that values differences among students, peers, patients, families, and communities.
• Lead students in applying the nursing process in clinical practice.
