Job summary

Duke University Health System in Durham, NC seeks a Nursing Care Assistant I for Duke University Hospital's Neuro Stepdown 8 DCT to deliver compassionate patient care on a 37-bed Neuro-Trauma-Stroke unit.

You will work alongside Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses to support daily living activities, monitor vitals, and assist with admissions, transfers, and procedures while participating in ongoing education and competency validation.

Qualifications

  • Current North Carolina Nursing Assistant I (NA I) certification in good standing.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required by the end of new hire orientation.
  • Ability to provide patient-centered care and work effectively as part of a healthcare team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients with daily care needs such as bathing, feeding, dressing, grooming, toileting, and ambulation.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, intake/output, blood glucose readings (with training), and other patient information.
  • Observe patients and promptly report changes in condition to the RN/LPN.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, patient transportation, and specimen collection.
  • Support providers and nurses during examinations and procedures.
  • Maintain patient rooms, stock supplies, and ensure equipment is available and functioning properly.
  • Follow infection prevention, safety, and patient privacy standards.
  • Participate in ongoing education and required competency validation.

Nursing Care Assistant I-Duke University Hospital Neuro Stepdown 8 DCT

$5000 Commitment Bonus paid in 2 equal installments

3-12 hour shifts per week

Rotating shifts 7:00am-7:30pm or 7:00pm-7:30am

Unit 8DCT at Duke University Hospital is a 37-bed Neuro-Trauma-Stroke Progressive Care Unit (Stepdown) that provides specialized intermediate care for acute neurological patients

The Nursing Assistant I (NA I) works as a patient care support partner alongside Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to provide compassionate, high-quality care to patients. This role supports both direct patient care and unit coordination activities in a hospital setting. The NA I assists with activities of daily living, monitors and documents patient information, maintains a safe and clean environment, and helps ensure patient comfort and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current North Carolina Nursing Assistant I (NA I) certification in good standing.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required by the end of new hire orientation.
  • Ability to provide patient-centered care and work effectively as part of a healthcare team.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting throughout the shift.
  • Ability to assist with moving patients weighing more than 35 pounds using appropriate assistance or lift equipment.
