Job summary

Fairview Health Services seeks a Nursing Assistant for the Oncology Unit at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, MN. The role is a .8 FTE with 8-hour night shifts and alternating weekends, offering a varied weekday schedule.

You will work under an RN, perform vital signs, specimen collection, documentation, and assist with patient care while maintaining standards and patient education. Join a 184-bed facility with a focus on compassionate, holistic care.

Qualifications

• Minimum BLS certification or ability to obtain BLS upon OnTrack completion.
• Successful completion of Fairview OnTrack Nursing Assistant training or related program.
• Six months of direct care experience in long-term, home, or acute care settings.
• Current enrollment in an LPN/RN/Nurse Practitioner program with one clinical rotation.
• Current Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry certification on hire (not required if transferring roles).

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care duties: vital signs, bladder scanning, blood glucose, and care documentation.
• Report patient data and progress to the designated RN.
• Communicate with patient/family and health care team; reinforce education as directed.
• Maintain patient information in the EHR per policy and standards.
• Support nursing process and contribute to improving care outcomes.
• Ensure adherence to laws, regulations, and department procedures.

This role is a .8 FTE (64 hours every 2 weeks) working 8-hour night shifts, with every other weekend rotation. Variable weekday schedule.

About This Unit

The Med/Surg Oncology unit has 32 beds, 16 with lifts, seeing patients 18 years & up. Oncology, Hospice, GI, Urology, Bariatric Surgical, Medical-Surgical, & Telemetry patients make up the patient populations on this unit.

Responsibilities

A member of the interdependent team led by a designated RN, is accountable to perform patient care duties and activities for a group of patients. Performs such care as vital sign checks, bladder scanning, blood sugar testing, documentation of cares provided. Reports patient care data and progress of outcomes to designated RN.

• Demonstrates commitment to the universal guiding principles of the patient care model in order to achieve the M Health Fairview Nursing vision.
• Supports the Nursing Process to achieve outcome focused patient care. Supports holistic nursing theory based on Watson's theory of caring aligning with the practice standards of the American Holistic Nurses' Association and the nursing patient care model (Professional Partnership Model) in order to achieve the M Health Fairview Nursing vision.
• Communicates accurately and effectively with patient/family and health care team members. Reinforces patient education as directed by clinical staff.
• Achieves customer service excellence by understanding the needs of all internal and external customers, patients, families, physicians and the interdependent team.
• Documents patient information in EHR and/or other electronic system in accordance with program standards, department policies/procedures.
• Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
• Actively participates in creating and implementing improvements.

Required Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers) certification. Ontrack participants much be able to obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification upon completion of the OnTrack program.
• AND one or more of the following
• Successful completion of Fairview’s OnTrack Nursing Assistant training program or another Fairview sponsored Nursing Assistant program.
• Or
• Six months of recent direct care experience in a long term, home care or acute care setting. (Appropriate roles may include, Nursing Assistant, PCA, Resident Assistant or Emergency Room Technician)
• Or
• Current enrollment in an LPN, RN or Nurse Practitioner program, and completion of one (1) semester of clinical rotation within the program
• Or
• Current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire. This requirement does not need to be maintained throughout employment and is not required if subsequently transferring into another Nursing Assistant or Nursing Station Tech or Nursing Station Attendant position.
