Nursing Assistant- Inpatient Specialty Care
  • Department: Department of Veterans Affairs

This Nursing Assistant position is located within the Medical/Surgical Unit at the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System. The Medical/Surgical Unit Nursing Assistant provides coverage to various clinical areas in the inpatient setting as assigned and is responsible for delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.

Key Responsibilities

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional Duties include, but not limited to: Provide nursing care to patients with multiple geriatric, psychiatric, and/or medical problems. Perform a variety of nursing care activities, including but not limited to: vital signs, brace/splint application, culture specimen collection, activities of daily living, and glucose monitoring.

Observe, report, and record current observations such as patients' physical condition, emotional response, skin condition, variations in vital signs, personal habits, and reactions to illness and treatment, documenting these in the approved format. Recognize the need for and institute emergency measures; assist in resuscitation procedures during cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest.

Interpret the appropriate information to identify each patient's age-specific needs and provide the necessary care. Respond to concerns of patients and visitors in a manner that is effective and improves customer satisfaction. Check equipment, supplies, and containers to ensure products are not outdated and are appropriately stocked according to unit procedures.

Manage patient behavior appropriately, intervene when necessary, and request assistance from other healthcare members as needed. Enter information about the patient's condition in the chart, utilizing appropriate formats. Serve as the unit's safe patient handling liaison. Serve as a preceptor and mentor to other Nursing Assistants. Orient members of the healthcare team to the unit, as appropriate.

Prepare, ambulate, transport, and position patients using the necessary equipment. Work Schedule: Sunday-Saturday, Day Shifts, 8 and 12 hour shifts. Rotating holidays and weekends requested. Work is scheduled between 6:45 a.m.- 7:15 p.m., 6:45 a.m.- 3: 15 p.m. 10:45 a.m.- 7:15 p.m. Additional Pay: Shift Differential - 10% of basic pay for work performed during regularly scheduled hours between 6pm and 6am.

Weekend Premium - 25% of basic pay for work performed between the hours of midnight Friday and midnight Sunday. This includes continuous service connected to work performed during these hours. Holiday Pay - 2 times basic hourly rate for regularly scheduled, non-overtime work on a designated holiday. Compressed/Flexible: Authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases.

When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year).

Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior [work experience] or military service experience. Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Telework: Not available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not authorized Physical requirements: This position requires some degree of fitness, strength, and agility.

Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, pulling, lifting arm overhead, and similar activities. You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination.

Requirements & Education

IMPORTANT: If basing all or part of your basic qualifications on education or training, an unofficial copy of college transcripts showing completion of one year of education above high school related to the Nursing Assistant occupation or documentation showing completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant is required to verify you meet the basic qualification requirements.

If basing your qualifications on education at the GS-4 or -5 levels, you must submit a copy of all relevant transcripts with your application. You do not need to submit an official copy; however, your submitted transcript must include your name, name of school, name of program, total credits completed, date degree/certificate conferred. Your transcript will be reviewed for relevant coursework; therefore, the copy you submit must be legible.

Candidates who do not yet meet the basic education requirement but are currently enrolled in a post high school technical school, junior college, college, or university completing coursework related to the Nursing Assistant occupation, must provide proof of enrollment at the time of application. Note: Only education or degrees recognized by the U.S.

Department of Education from accredited colleges, universities, schools, or institutions may be used to qualify for Federal employment. If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education.
