UNC Health in Chapel Hill is seeking a Nursing Assistant I for the Surgical Trauma Critical Care Unit. This per diem role features 12-hour rotating day and night shifts with weekend/holiday rotation.

Work is onsite in a fast-paced Level 1 Trauma certified unit, supporting care for trauma and surgical patients under RN/physician supervision. Strong English communication and basic computer skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Must hold Nursing Assistant I certification per NC DHHS.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Prefer six months of nursing assistant experience.
• Fluent in English and able to use basic computer systems.

Responsabilités

• Assist physicians with routine examinations and procedures.
• Assist in psychiatric care, provide de-escalation and support.
• Observe and document patient information; report changes to RN/physician.
• Assist with admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide direct care including vital signs, wound care, glucose checks, ROM.
• Assist with activities of daily living and ambulation.
• Maintain unit cleanliness, restock supplies, and transport patients.
• Reinforce instructions and distribute patient education materials.

Nursing Assistant I (Per Diem) needed for the Surgical Trauma Critical Care Unit The Surgical Trauma Critical Care Unit, in the new state-of-the-art North Carolina Surgical Hospital, is a fast-paced, Level 1 Trauma certified, Beacon Gold Award for Excellence designated, 40-bed unit specializing in the care of critically injured trauma and surgical patients. This unit serves a variety of surgical patients in addition to trauma to include, but not limited to, transplant, plastics, oncology, obstetrics, gynecology, gastrointestinal, and orthopedics. Teamwork and interdisciplinary collaboration are hallmarks for this unit while providing expert “Carolina Care” to the patients and families we serve. Our ONE GREAT TEAM facilitates admissions, treatments, transfers, and discharges of patients 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. This is a Per Diem/ at-will position requiring the ability to work a minimum of 24 hours every month; Shifts are for rotating days & nights, 12 hours (7am-7:30pm & 7pm-7:30am), with weekend and holiday rotation.

Summary: Provides routine direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, clinic or home health care setting. All work performed is under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Responsibilities

1. 1. Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
2. 2. In the psychiatric setting, aids patients in reality orientation, participates in behavior modification plans/therapy, provides informal support therapy to patients/families, provides verbal de-escalation of potentially aggressive patients, aids in the physical management of aggressive/out-of-control patients, facilitates age appropriate play for children, and monitors the therapeutic milieu activities on assigned unit to ensure that emotional and safety needs of patients are met.
3. 3. Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.
4. 4. Provides assistance to patients and their families during admission to the clinical area, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge

Provides care/ treatments to patients as outlined in plan of care including, but not limited to, the measurement of vital signs, height and weight, specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive 11 patient and family interactions.
6. 6. Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding and assisting with ambulation.
7. 7. Provides indirect care to patients and assigned area to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, changing linens, re-stocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/ supplies/ specimens, assisting in the orientation of new employees and students, and some routine clerical functions.
8. 8. Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Professional Experience Requirements:

• Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

• Fluent in verbal and written English language and able to develop basic computer skills.
