UNC Health Care System in Chapel Hill is seeking a Nursing Assistant I (Per Diem) for the Geriatric / Crisis Stabilization and Perinatal Psychiatry Unit (4 Neurosciences). This role supports patient care under RN/physician supervision with day and night rotating shifts and required attendance at weeklong orientation.

The unit comprises geriatric, crisis stabilization and perinatal psychiatry beds, delivering comprehensive psychiatric care in a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Must have Nursing Assistant I licensure in North Carolina.
• BLS certification required.
• Prefer six months nursing assistant experience.
• Fluent English with basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procure equipment during emergencies.
• Aid patients in reality orientation, participate in behavior modification plans, provide informal support to patients and families.
• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report significant changes to the nurse or physician.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, ROM, and other plan-of-care tasks.
• Provide direct personal care with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and ambulation.
• Assist in area maintenance, stocking, cleaning, and clerical functions; orient new staff.
• Reinforce teaching and distribute patient education materials.

A Nursing Assistant I (Per Diem) is needed for theGeriatric / Crisis Stabilization and Perinatal Psychiatry Unit (4 Neurosciences).

4 Neurosciences is comprised of three adult units which serve specific mental health populations. Geropsychiatry is a 10-bed unit serving geriatric patients admitted for the management of multiple medical and mental health issues. Crisis Stabilization is a 15-bed unit with nursing care provided to patients hospitalized for stabilization during acute mental health episodes. Perinatal Psychiatry is a 5-bed unit solely focused on treatment of women with psychiatric disorders during pregnancy or post-partum.

This is a Per Diem/ at-will position requiring the ability to generally work a minimum of 12 hours every 2 weeks; Day & Night Rotating shifts, general hours are 7am-7:30pm & 7pm-7:30am, with weekend and holiday rotation. Manager/department may change the shift based on the needs of the department. This position requires the ability to attend the required weeklong hospital orientation offered every two weeks.

Orientation Schedule: Monday & Tuesday - Virtual ; Wednesday - 8am to 10am Virtual and in person from 12pm to 5 pm; and Thursday - Virtual.

Summary:

Provides routine direct and indirect patient care in a hospital, clinic or home health care setting. All work performed is under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician.

Responsibilities:

1. Assist physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies during emergency situations.
2. In the psychiatric setting, aids patients in reality orientation, participates in behavior modification plans/therapy, provides informal support therapy to patients/families, provides verbal de-escalation of potentially aggressive patients, aids in the physical management of aggressive/out-of-control patients, facilitates age appropriate play for children, and monitors the therapeutic milieu activities on assigned unit to ensure that emotional and safety needs of patients are met.
3. Observes, collects, and documents patient information obtained while providing care and promptly report significant changes in the patient's condition to a registered nurse or physician.
4. Provides assistance to patients and their families during admission to the clinical area, orientation to the hospital/clinic/home health experience, and discharge
5. Provides care/ treatments to patients as outlined in plan of care including, but not limited to, the measurement of vital signs, height and weight, specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, postural drainage, and supportive 11 patient and family interactions.
6. Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care for routine activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, feeding and assisting with ambulation.
7. Provides indirect care to patients and assigned area to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, changing linens, re-stocking supplies, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, transporting patients/ supplies/ specimens, assisting in the orientation of new employees and students, and some routine clerical functions.
8. Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Professional Experience Requirements:

• Prefer six (6) months of nursing assistant experience

Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

• Fluent in verbal and written English language and able to develop basic computer skills.
